KMHS Third In Sectional Track Meet Kings Mountain's Mountaineers finished third in the Sectional Track Meet last Thursday at East Henderson High School and will compete in the Western Regionals Saturday at Shelby. North Buncombe won the event with 98 points. Shelby followed with 90 and KM had 81. Victor Bell picked up the only two first places for the Mountaineers. He won the 400 me- ters in 53.20 seconds, edging Dean Lytles of Brevard who was the state champion last year in the 100 and 200 meters. Lytle is headed to Notre Dame on a track scholarship. Lytle's time was 53.59 seconds. Bell also won the long jump with aleap of 21'3 1/2". Other KM finishers: 110 high hurdles - Craig Goode fourth, 15.95; Timmy McClain sixth. 100 meters - Rodney Houser fifth, 11.7. 400 meters - Mike Byers fourth, 3.35.9. 300 hurdles - Craig Goode sixth, 44.65. 200 meters - Mike Byers second, 23.17; Rodney Houser third, 23.61; Diron Bell sixth, 24.06. Pole vault - Andy Turner third, 11 feet. 1600 meters - Ryan Hollifield second, 4:38; Roger Clemons, third, 4:42. 800 relay - Mike Byers, Rodney Houser, Diron Bell and Pat Ross third, 1:31.89. 400 relay - Tony Currence, Eugene Morgan, John Forrest and Pat Ross, fifth, 46.6. Triple jump - Timmy McClain sixth, 39'2". 3200 meters - Ronnie Yarbro fifth, 10:49. 1600 relay - Ryan Hollifield, John Forrest, Victor Bell, Mike Byers, fourth, 3:33.16. Saturday's Regionals at Shelby will get underway at 10 a.m. with the finals to begin at 1 p.m. The top four in each event will qualify for the state meet May 26 in Raleigh. Dye Wins Duckpin Bowling Crown First half champion Johnny Dye won three of four games from sec- ond half champ Wally Mocanu Tuesday night in a special roll-off for the Mixed Duckpin Bowling League championship at Dilling Heating. Dye won the first two games of the scheduled five-game series. Mocanu came back to win the third game before Dye closed out the se- ries in the fourth match. Dye rolled a 133 game to lead his team to victory in the first match, 369-346. Mocanu led his group with a 139. JACKIE HOUSTON Jackie Houston Wins In Tennis Jackie Houston of Kings Mountain won first place in the Hickory Junior Invitational Tennis Tournament in the 12-year girls novice division last weekend. Miss Houston defeated Tracy Brooks 6-1, 6-2; Ryan Weaver 6-1, 6-2; Courtney Kingston 6-3, 6-4; and Danielle Fox 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. Jackie's home court is Kings Mountain Country Club. She is a fifth grade student at North School and is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Martin Stallings. BUS DRIVER CLASS Bus driver training classes will be held Tuesday, May 22, and Thursday, May 24, from 8:30 a.m. | to 2:30 p.m. at Crest High School. In the second game, R.W. Hullender rolled a 151 as Dye dom- inated the game, 393-323. Janet Parker led Mocanu with a 111. Mary Eastwood turned in the highest game of the night, a 147, to lead Mocanu to victory in the third game, 388-328. Dye led his group with a 130. Hullender's 133 led Dye to victo- ry in the deciding fourth game. Dye won 359-320. Members of the championship team were Dot Mobley, R.W. Hullender and Johnny Dye. Members of the Mocanu team were Wally Mocanu, Mary Eastwood and Janet Parker. Bar H Championship Rodeo | May 18-19 In Boiling Springs The third annual Bar H Championship Rodeo and Country Festival will take place May 18-19 at the Bar H arena in Boiling Springs. The country festival and hot dog-hamburger supper will be- gin at 6 p.m. each day and the championship rodeo will be sanc- tioned by the Southern States Professional Rodeo Association. This year's rodeo is being sponsored by the Flint- Hill Baptist Church youth. The best of professional rodeo competition will be featured. Almost all past and current champi- ons will be entered. Second place was Randy Hall with nine pounds, four ounces; and third was Larry Melton with seven pounds, eight ounces. Melton also caught the big fish. Sports Banquet Monday Night Kings Mountain High's annual spring sports banquet will be held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Kings Mountain won the confer- ence with an 11-1 record and has a 16-1 overall mark. Leigh has a team in the state playoffs for the fourth time and his second straight year at KMHS.
