Starting A New Decade PAGE 1-B- Headed To The 21st Century 234 KMHS Seniors Receive Diplomas Diplomas were awarded to 234 graduating seniors of the Class of 1990 of Kings Mountain Senior High School May 29 in John Gamble Memorial Football Stadium. Commencement exercises began on May 27 with the baccalaureate sermon in Barnes Auditorium. Seniors took part in the program for the finals exercises. At the baccalaureate program, Rev. David Philbeck, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church, deliv- ered the sermon. Assisting on the program were Rev. John Heath, pastor of East Kings Mountain Church of God; Rev. Robert Little, pastor of Central United Methodist Church; Rev. John FE. Bridges, pas- tor of Grover First Baptist Church; and Rev. Larry Dixon, pastor of Grover Long Branch First Baptist Church. Officers of the Class of 1990 participated in finals exercises. They included: President Rivers Smith who introduced the Class of 1990; Secretary Ashley Champion who presented honor graduates; Treasurer Carmen Smith who pre- sented the class gift; and Vice President Scott Belcher who pro- nounced the benediction. SPO President John Hendricks IV gave the welcome. The Choral Union of KMSHS presented special music. Acceptance of the class gift was made by School Board Chairman Doyle Campbell. Noi Ouaneoudone gave the invocation. Chief Marshal Michael Jordan assisted Principal Jackie Lavender and Supt. Bob McRae in present- ing diplomas. Other marshals are Charles Bridges, Matthew Bunch, Heather Caveny, Susan Hendricks, Sharon Horton, Nicole Jackson, Adella Robertson, Vincent Walker, Angela Whitaker, Derick Williams and Robbie Wilson. The class motto was "Each of us is the accumulation of our memo- ries." The class colors are black and gold. The class flower was yellow rose and the class song was "I Remember you." Gash, Ashley Gillespie, James Meet The Top Two KMHS Graduates Betsy Mcintyre Elizabeth Adams (Betsy) McIntyre has successfully combined good grades with plenty of interests during her high school career and ranks No. 1 in the Class of 1990 at Kings Mountain Senior High School. Not only is Betsy tops academically, but she ranks high in popularity with students and in extra-curricular activities on campus and in the community. In addition to her top marks at school, she has re- ceived high marks as a volunteer at Kings Mountain Hospital where she helped organize the Girls Auxiliary and was president of Candystripers. She also serves as a Red Cross volunteer, volunteers at Mauney Memorial Library and has represented her church- St.Matthew's Lutheran-at numerous state youth con- ventions. Betsy gives much credit to her parents, Lee and Beth McIntyre, her brother, Trey, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Houser and Mrs. Lee A. McIntyre Sr., as well as her church family and teach- ers, for their encouragement and love and calls organi- zation of time a key to her academic success. Miss Mcintyre feels that setting priorities will be high on her list of goals when she enters the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall to pursue a career as a pharmacist. She wants to combine a career with marriage and a family and because she has al- ways wanted a career in medicine opted for training as a pharmacist. "I thought about a medical career but I want to have some time for family," she said. Betsy likes to read, enjoys tennis and modeling. Summers find her working at Sadie Mill, where her father is general manager, and attending Broyhill Leadership Institute, Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics at Western Carolina University, and par- ticipating in church conferences. She also attended Presidential Classroom in Washington, D.C. and was a Morehead scholarship nominee. She received the "I Dare You" leadership award and was a Governor's School nominee in the performing arts area. She served as president of the National Honor Society, was active in Beta Club all four years of high school, was chief marshal, and served as secretary-treasurer of the concert band. Betsy played in the band four years, was in the pep band and flag squad three years. She was BETSY MCINTYRE active in French, Science, Key Clubs and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, in addition to other clubs on campus. She was on the tennis team four years. Betsy admits she has mixed emotions about graduat- ing high school but she is ready for college. She was notified months ago of her acceptance at Carolina and is counting the days when she can enroll as a fresh- man. She's recipient of a $2,000 scholarship from the Lutz Foundation and a $500 scholarship from Service Merchandise. After high school graduation, she plans to celebrate with a vacation trip to the beach with her family. Ashley Champion Versatile and talented, Ashley Champion ranks No. 2 in a class of 234 graduating seniors at Kings Mountain Senior High School. Not only does Ashley rank tops scholastically, but she has excelled in dozens of community and church activities. Her personality and friendliness earns her high marks with friends on and off campus. Family and church have high priorities with Ashley, who says her family's active role in her school activi- ties have encouraged her to attain high marks. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Champion and she has three brothers, Chris, Kevin and Justin. A Presidential Alumni Scholar to Clemson University, she is recipient of a $4,400 scholarship for each of the four years she plans to study at Clemson. She has an undeclared major but plans to get a degree in liberal arts. Ashley plans to celebrate graduation from high school by going on a shopping spree, one of the fun things she likes to do with friends and family. Then, she will work this summer as a clerical assistant at her * father's business, Champion Contracting Company, and as a sales clerk at Incredible Chocolate Chip Cookie Company and start packing for college., A member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, she sings in the choir and participates in youth group. She has also been active in White Shrines Club events for four years and was White Plains Shrine Queen in 1986. She lettered four years on the Girls tennis team at KMHS and was co-captain her senior year. She also lettered in girls softball four years. Ashley attended Governor's School West in 1989 and Tar Heel Girls State in 1989. She was a North Carolina Scholar Athlete in tennis and softball all four years, played on the all-conference team in tennis, won the Mountaineer Doubles Award, and was a Morehead nominee. She was on the honor roll all four years of high school and in Beta Club, serving as treasurer her senior year. She was a member of All-State Band and was in the marching band three years, the concert band four years, the pep band three years and the flag squad three years. She was also a member of the Monogram, Key, Pep, Drama, French and Key Clubs and active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. ASHLEY CHAMPION She was a National Semi-finalist in the Coca Cola Scholars program and senior class secretary. "Both young ladies who rank No. 1 and 2 in the Senior class have organized their skills in a magnifi- cent way to be able to make top grades and carry all the weighted courses and extra-curricular activities they do with such ease," said Mrs. Doyle Campbell, guidance counselor. Ashley admits mixed emotions at graduating high school. She's sure she will miss the many friends she has made over the years but she's ready to begin a bright, new future.
