KM Beats Shelby, Playoffs Will Begin Saturday Night Kings Mountain's Legion base- ball team, after getting back on vic- tory row Tuesday night with a 7-2 victory over Shelby, will start play- off action Saturday night at Lancaster field against at undeter- mined foe. Coach Bruce Clark's team was scheduled to play Bessemer City in its final regular-season game Wednesday night. Kings Mountain entered Wednesday's game with a 9-6 Western Division record. Taylorsville held a half-game lead over Hickory at 12-4. Hickory was 11-4. Kings Mountain was tied with Caldwell County for the number three spot. Tied for fifth place were Forest City, Burke County and Cherryville, all with 7-8 records. All playoffs will be best-of-five series until the championship round, when they switch to best-of-seven. Kings Mountain will host the first game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Lancaster Field. The schedule calls for games to be played on a rotating basis until a winner is determined. The teams will skip Wednesday and Thursday. If fourth and fifth games should be necessary, they would be played on Friday and Saturday of next week. Keith Allen, who played his baseball in Shelby before moving to Kings Mountain, was tough on his old teammates Tuesday, holding them to just seven hits en route to hurling the 7-2 win. "He was just what the doctor or- dered,” Coach Clark said, "after we had dropped consecutive games to Hickory and Cherryville. I think pitching against some of his former teammates was an added incentive." Clark is hoping his team will peak at playoff time. "If anybody had told me some three weeks ago that we would finish with double digit wins, I wouldn't have believed them," he said. "That's particularly the case since we are drawing our players exclusively from Kings Mountain." "Our attendance picked up in our game against Shelby, and I hope our fans will come out and support us during the playoffs." Post 155 has been playing on a daily basis. Since last Wednesday, they had played seven games going into Wednesday's contest against Bessemer City, winning four and losing three. While Allen was silencing Shelby's bats Tuesday, Kings Mountain was getting 11 hits off Chris Ensley, including two each from Chris Bullock, David Jenkins, Daniel Honeycutt and Allen. Last Wednesday, Chris Henson and Eric Peppard had three hits — each in a 5-2 loss to Lenoir. Kings Mountain followed that up with a big 7-6 win over Taylorsville as John Reid had three hits, including a home run. Chip Cash had two hits, including a homer. Post 155 lowered the boom on Forest City 21-7 as Cash had three hits, including a homer. Henson and Chris Plonk also had three hits, and Plonk added a two-run homer. Chad Plonk had three hits in a 7- 1 win over Shelby. Cash, Chris Plonk and Ken Crook had two hits each. In a 9-5 loss to Hickory, Chris Plonk had two hits. Post 155 defeated Cherryville Monday 11-7 as Chad Plonk had three hits, including a home run, and Peppard a pair of hits. Both Chad and Chris Plonk are having big seasons for Post 155, along with Bullock and Honeycutt.
