CHAMP From Page 1-A placed fifth in the versatility class of the show and Libby and Melissa were her grooms. For that particu- lar class, the contestants and two grooms entered the ring and changed tacks to show in four events without leaving the ring. Events included Hunter Under Saddle, Western Pleasure, Barrels and Reining. Melissa and Sunny Tag Deluxe finished seventh in the Novice ' Amateur Western Pleasure Class. Audrey's family purchased her prize winner, Cowboy, from the T/L Ranch in Dallas last year and since then have shown him in shows in both Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia, bringing home nu- merous awards and points to Cowboy's credit. "Cowboy stood grand in all the shows," said proud Audrey. The Fallses have shown Paints and Quarterhorses for a number of years, taking vacation trips to horse shows with the two girls and their horses. Brenda Falls says the girls show their horses in shows al- most every month. The big horse complexes in Raleigh and Arden offer shows even in the winter time because the riding rings are inside. Horse enthusiasts like the Falls ap- preciate the North Carolina arenas which cut down on their traveling time. There's a Turkey Circuit dur- ing Thanksgiving and a Easter Bunny Circuit during Easter Weekend, to name a few of the special events the young trainers participate in with their beauties. "Horse ' training is a real chal- lenge for our daughters,"says Brenda, who says that Audrey wants to develop what has begun as a hobby into a profession. Brenda and Jim Falls and Grandpa J. B. Falls are encouraging the girls to go on to college after high school but now that the horses are winning in competitive events the girls like the idea of becoming pro- fessional trainers and showing horses for a living. Audrey raised and trained her 2- year-old Quarterhorse, Smokys Social Lassie, one of three foals of Smokys Sapphire which the family acquired in a trade six years ago. Audrey and Libby take care of the horses. Smokys Social Lassie is goodminded and learns quickly and Audrey has taught her to give her a kiss and to bow, which she hopes will bring the horse extra points in the Tom Powers Futurity in Raleigh August 15. That show draws horse lovers from as far dis- tant as Texas and California. Jerry Reid of Southern Pines Quarterhorses fitted Cowboy for the championship show and was trainer. Audrey says Cowboy will be ready for the World Show in Lexington, Ky. in 1991. Her family is planning their vacation to attend the show. W.P. GIBBONS JR.
