SCHOOLS: From Page 1-A parents were having a hard time unloading their students in the small parking lot beside the gym and getting back onto Gaston Street. When students arrived at Kings Mountain High Monday they found it hot and humid, not only outside but inside. Air conditioning units were not in working order and most classes reported tempera- tures of over 90 degrees. It got so unbearable in the early afternoon hours that school was dismissed. The units were put in working order early Tuesday morn- ing but school was still dismissed at 12:30 because there was not Siamphone Phanthalack, student at Kings Mountain Senior High, was among 109 junior high school students, including three from Cleveland County, who attended the Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development at Western Carolina University at Cullowhee. Also attending the three-week residential program were Brad Cornwell of Burns Junior High School and Kara Fraser of Crest Junior High School. Funded for the fifth year by the General Assembly, the Legislators’ School enrolled = 600 junior and senior high school students in the state at its WCU and East Carolina University locations. The July 8-28 session was for eighth and ninth graders in the 50 western counties of North Carolina. Students from rural areas were selected at a 3-1 ratio over urban students because of the program's philosophy that rural students have fewer enrich- ment opportunities in school than urban students. Special weekly events included hikes, field trips, white-water rafting and cultural events on the WCU campus. "Choice day" activities ranged from publishing a newsletter to studying the effects of acid rain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 226 S.
