Thursday, August 23, 1990 -THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3A 15,1990 at 5 CPO JOE REYNOLDS SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- Memorial services for Chief Petty Officer Oliver Joe Reynolds, 62, Kings Mountain native, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Clairemount Mortuary in San Diego, California. He died Aug.15, 1990 at the Naval Hospital in San Diego after a short illness. ; The Officers Club, of which he was active, led the military burial rites at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery in San Diego. Retired in 1967 after 22 years with the U. S. Navy, he was a su- pervisor in the Mechanics Department of P. S. A. Airlines in San Diego. He joined the Seabees at the age of 17 and transferred to the U. S. Navy Aeronautical Division, where he earned his col- lege education as an aeronautical engineer. He was stationed on Okinawa, Japan, and in Vietnam and was aboard the U. S. S. Kitty Hawk when the ship was ripped by fire and explosion. During his youth he worked at Mauney Mills in Kings Mountain and W. K. Mauney, his guardian, signed the papers for him to join the U.S. Navy. Son of the late Charles C. Reynolds and Pearl Jeanette McDaniel Reynolds Anderson, he was reared in the Salem, Va. Lutheran Orphanage. Twenty-sev- en years after the death of his par- ents, he was reunited with his fami- ly at a reunion in Kings Mountain planned by his sister, Lila Reynolds Croft, Kings Mountain's first woman funeral director who worked at Sisk Funeral Home in Kings Mountain for 11 1/2 years before retirement. Separated when they were children at the death of their father, Mrs. Croft had been reared in Kings Mountain by her uncles, Ed and Howard Whitaker, and their sister, Myra Faye, had been adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Murray of Ridley Park, Pa. "I never will forget that reunion day," said Mrs. Croft, who for rea- sons of health was unable to fly to California for the funeral services. "At one time Joe, his baby brother, and his brother-in-law were all sta- tioned overseas at the same place and didn't know the other was there," she said. Surviving are his wife, Hellen S. Reynolds, also a retired Navy offi- cer; daughter, Linda Carlson of East Meadows, Long Island, N. Y.; son, Harry J. Reynolds of Breago Springs, Calif.; sisters, Lila Reynolds Croft of Kings Mountain and Myra Faye Reynolds Black of Fredricks, Pa.; brother, Clyde F. Anderson of Albany, Ga. and five grandchildren. The Reynolds family resides at 1367 Antiem Street, San Diego, California. Memorials may be sent to the local chapters of the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. HAROLD DEAN SMITH Funeral services for Harold Dean Smith, 56, of Route 2 Bethlehem Road, who died August p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, were conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. Rev. Mitchell Pruitt and Rev. Richard Styers officiated, and in- terment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the Ivey Martin Smith and the late Eueal Smith. He was a veteran of U. S. Marine Corps. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three brothers, Junior Smith, Johnny Smith and Edward - Smith, all of Kings Mountain; and three sisters, Patricia Welch, Judy Bridges and Bobbie Weaver, all of Kings Mountain. COOKSEY BLACKSBURG, S.C.-John Robert "JR" Cooksey, 60, of 221 Cobb Road, who died Aug. 18, 1990 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney, were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Billy R. Boone and Rev. Lewis Batchler, in- terment following in Clingman Memorial Gardens. A native of Cherokee County, S. C., he was the son of the late Earl and Annie Mae Wright Cooksey Pennington and was a member of was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a former em- ployee of W. P. Cooksey Construction Co. Surviving are sons, Bobby Cooksey, Jimmy Cooksey and Jerry Cooksey, all of Blacksburg; daughters, Cathy Denise Cooksey of Kings Mountain and Teresa Ann Ramsey of Blacksburg; brother, James P. Cooksey of Blacksburg sister, Dorothy McIntyre of Shelby; and 11 grandchildren. C.W. NALLEY MORGANTON-Funeral ser- Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Brown" Nalley, 21, of Route 11, who died Aug. 18, 1990 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Highway 18, were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church. Rev. Vernon Craig officiated, and interment was in the church cemetery. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Charlie Pete and Lois Ann Moore Nalley of Casar. He was a Baptist and was em- ployed as a roofer. Surviving, in addition to his par- ents, are sisters, Lorie Sherrill Nalley of Casar and Mrs. Regina Denise Whiten of Blacksburg, S.C.; grandmother, Wilma Moore Gray Neal and stepgrandfather, Jasper Neal of Gastonia. RODNEY SCOTT BARBER RIDGELAND, MS-Funeral ser- vices for Rodney Scott Barber, 28, . who died at home Aug. 10, 1990, were conducted Aug. 15, 1990 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Alabama with the Rev. Jerry Pike officiating and burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. He was the son of Frank S. and Maxine Baity Barber of Jacksonville, Alabama and grand- son of Raymond S$. and Lucille D. Barber of Gastonia and James F. and Mary Ruth Baity of Kings Mountain, A Kings Mountain native and a Ridgeland resident for the past two years, he was employed by Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He was a graduate of Cherokee High School in Centre and a graduate of Jacksonville State University with a degree in business finance. He served in the U. S. Marines, where he received numerous awards, Surviving, in addition to his par- ents and grandparents, is his broth- er, Randy S. Barber of Gadsden, Alabama.
