The Mountaineers will travel to East Lincoln Thursday night. Kings Mountain packed all of its offense into the first half. The Mountaineers added their second touchdown with 1:52 left in the first period on a one-yard run by Robbie Ruff. The touchdown was set up on a fumble recovery at the East Gaston 16 by Sherman Steele. Ruff picked up 10 yards on the six and Kasey Holland added a five-yard run to the one before Ruff went around right end for the score. Kings Mountain's final touch- down came with 3:00 remaining on a six-yard run by Holland. The touchdown was set up by a pass in- terception at the Warrior 17. The Mountaineers had two other scoring opportunities in the first half. With the score 6-0, Steele caught a 35-yard pass from Black which carried to the East four yard line, but the Warriors held on four straight running plays. Moments later, however, Steele recovered a Warrior fumble to set up Ruff's score. Early in the fourth quarter, a 50- yard Mountaineer drive was stopped when Black fumbled into the endzone. O WITH NEWSPAPER RECYCLING Halford Named Coach At G-W Brenda Halford has been named the head women's basketball coach at Gardner-Webb College. Halford, age 35, replaces Bud Black, who coached the women to the two most successful seasons in school history in his two year tenure. "The hiring of Brenda Halford as women's basketball coach and ten- nis coach gives Gardner-Webb two full-time coaches for women's ath- letics," stated Gardner-Webb President Dr. M. Christopher White. "Her appointment is another example of Gardner-Webb's con- tinued commitment to excellence in athletics and academics." White also expressed his gratitude to for- mer coach Bud Black. "Coach Black took a struggling program and in two years turned it into a program of national prominence." Halford has coached at Erwin High School for the last eight years, from 1982-90. During that span she compiled a 116-85 overall record and won two conference championships. Before her tenure ! as head coach she was the assistant women's basketball coach at Erwin from 1972-82. She taught Health and Physical Education at Erwin i Middle School beginning in 1978 \ and ending in 1988 when she moved to Erwin High school. From * 1978-82 at Erwin Middle School she also coached the boys and girls “ track team and compiled an amaz- ing 55-3 record as head coach of * the girls basketball team in addi- : tion to her teaching and assistant high school coaching duties. Halford graduated from Western { Carolina with a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education in 8 | 1977 and with a Masters in Health and Physical Education in 1978. ' | While at Western Carolina she served as a graduate assistant with the Lady Catamounts basketball program. During the past eight years Halford has run her own summer basketball camp for girls grades 3- 9 and worked numerous basketball camps for high school girls at Asheville area colleges. In addi- tion, she officiated high school vol- leyball for 11 years before obtain- ing her collegiate volleyball state rating in 1989. Halford will also coach the women's tennis team in addition to her basketball responsibilities. I'm very excited to be at Gardner-Webb, "said Halford. "I've been impressed by the family at- mosphere and with the commit- ment to academics. Believe me I want to win but I also want us to be academically sound. We want to graduate our players and have high ethical standards such as morality, honesty and fairness.” In describ- ing her anticipated style of play she said, "We want to play an aggres- sive ‘in your face' style of defense combined with an offense designed to capitalize on the fast break." Shelby won 2-1 in overtime. KM Second In County Tourney Kings Mountain High's soccer team finished second in the Cleveland County tournament Friday and Saturday at Gardner- Webb. The Mountaineers, 1-2 overall, defeated Burns 2-1 in overtime Friday before losing to Shelby 2-1 in overtime in Saturday's champi- onship game. Kings Mountain was scheduled to host Ashbrook last night and will travel to Hunter Huss Thursday at 7 p.m. KM hosts Hibriten next Monday in a non- conference game and will open Southwestern 3-A Conference ac- tion at home next Wednesday against R-S Central. Sirimaha Rithiphong scored all three goals for KM in the Gardner- Webb tournament. The Mountaineers fell behind Burns 1- 0 Friday on a goal by Seth Moore of the Bulldogs. John Ogburn scored for Shelby in overtime as the Lions scored their first soccer win ever over the Mountaineers in the championship match Saturday. KM won both games against Shelby in the Mountaineers’ first year of soccer last season. Rithiphong's first half goal had given KM a 1-0 lead but Shelby came back to force an overtime on a goal by Robert Gefaell. Shelby goalie Tommy Whisnant made a diving stop of a KM shot in the fi- nal minute of regulation to keep the Mounties from winning.
