Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, September 20, 1990 | Obituaries CAROLINE HARPER A one-car wreck in Asheboro ~Friday night claimed the lives of two young people, including a for- * mer Kings Mountain woman. Cynthia Caroline Harper, 24, daughter of Ragan Harper of Kings Mountain and Diane Fite Bailey of Belmont, and Philip Ronald Craven II, 23, both of Asheboro, died in the wreckage of Craven's 1989 Mazda which ran off the left side of a road in a sharp curve, came back across Spero Road and ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, according to Trooper W. I. Eckard. The acci- dent occurred at 11:30 p.m. .8 mile west of Asheboro city limits on Rural Paved Road 1504, a short distance from the Craven home. Funeral services for Miss Harper were held Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Kings Mountain's First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. Dr. Eric Faust was assisted by Rev. Gary Bryant and Rev. David Smith in officiating the service, and interment was in Gaston Memorial Park. Funeral services for Craven were held also on Monday at Asheboro's First United Methodist Church, of which he was a mem- ber. A 1989 graduate of N. C. State University, he was in the real estate business with his father. He is sur- vived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Craven Jr., a brother and a sister. A Kings Mountain native, Miss Harper was a graduate of Kings Mountain Senior High School and a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill. She was employed as a travel agent at Howard & Short Travel Co. in Asheboro. Also surviving, in addition to her parents, are her sister, Katherine Harper of Belmont; her grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Fite of Belmont; and her stepsister, Mrs. Jamie Lakey of Kings Mountain. Memorials may be made to Cleveland County Hospice, 201 W. Marion St., Shelby, 28150; American Cancer Society, 201 W. Marion St., Shelby, 28150; or to Muscular Dystrophy, 4530 Park Road, Charlotte. LEROY McGILL Funeral services for William Leroy McGill, 90, of $99 West Mountain Street, who died Sept. 18, 1990 at Kings Mountain Hospital, will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP Church, of which he was a member. His pastor, Rev. William Barron will officiate, and interment will be in Gastonia's Oakwood Cemetery. A native of Clover, S. C., he was the son of the late Lowry B. and Lona White McGill. He was a re- tired yard foreman at Spencer Lumber Company in Gastonia. He was married to the late Louise Long McGill, who died in 1970. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mae Sue Goforth McGill; brother, John L. McGill of Kings Mountain; and sister, Mrs. Elizabeth McGill Gamble of Kings Mountain. GILMORE BYERS GROVER-Funeral services for Mrs. Willie Ruth Malone Byers, 73, of Cleveland Avenue, wife of Gilmore Byers, were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, of which she was a mem- ber. Rev. Vernon Craig officiated, and interment was in Grover Cemetery. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she died September 16, 1990 at 4:10 a.m. at home. She was daughter of the late John William and Willie Spencer Malone and was a retired secretary at Minette Mills and a former salesperson at J. C. Penny Co. in Shelby. Church organist for nine years at Antioch Baptist Church, she had served as church organist for Grover First Baptist Church for 43 years. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, Charles A. Byers of Darlington, S. C., Kenneth M. Byers of Gaffney, S. C. and Gary D. Byers of Grover; her sister, Miss Lorene Malone of Gaffney; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Cleveland County Hospice, 201 W. Marion Street, Shelby, 28150. GRIMSLEY CHERRY VILLE-Funeral ser- vices for Mrs. Mae Gordon Grimsley, 70, of 102 Woodberry Drive, who died September 16, 1990 at 10:27 a.m. at Kings Mountain Hospital, were held Wednesday at 4 p. m. at Buffalo Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Rev. Max Turner Jr. and Rev. James Cottle officiated, and inter- ment was in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. A native of Gaston County, she was wife of Hubert L. Grimsley, who survives, and daughtet of the late Luther William and Hester Cook Self. ) Surviving, in addition to her Kings Mountain Man Faces Arson Charges Kings Mountain Police arrested Patheriaco Joe McClain, 38, of 218 Parrish Drive, on Tuesday and charged him with one felonious count of burning an uninhabited dwelling and one count felonious count of second degree arson. Henry Jenkins, pastor of Cherryville Church of God, will be evangelist for revival services Sept. 23-26 at East Kings Mountain Church of God.
