The KMPD Captain now has a 34-11 record and a two-game lead over Darrell Austin, who is 32-13. Austin and Gary Stewart tied for second last week with 11-4 marks but Stewart is still in third place for the year with a mark of 31-14. Guest picker John Henry Moss was 10-5 last week, giving the guests a 25-20 mark for the year. This week's guest picker is Brett "I Know My Football" Jensen, the big time play-by-play man for WKMT Radio. He says he leaned everything he knows about football from Jonas Bridges, so he's sure the guests' record will improve. That Was Awesome, Bill! Sunday's win at Dover Downs International Speedway by Bill Elliott did more than just take the pressure off Team Elliott. The win affected thousands, be- ginning at the Dawsonville Pool Hall where they were able to blow the rust out of the siren as they cel- ebrated Bill's first win in 23 races. Then across the U.S., Elliott fans were able to get out Coors caps, number 9 flags and Million Dollar Bill T-shirts. Elliott souvenir items have been missing, for the most part, during NS 1990 Winston Cup season with ¢ domination of General Motors “cars and Dale Earnhardt. Mark Martin and Geoff Bodine have had victories for Ford, but not all Elliott fans are Ford fans. Earnhardt in 1990 has amassed a group of loyal fans like nobody since Elliott of 1985 or Richard Petty of old. The remaining race fans have had to eat a lot of Earnhardt crow. To show up with Elliott's colors or number previous- ly this year would draw looks like a polyester suit. But no longer. Elliott fans are free. In winning over Mark Martin, Earnhardt, Harry Gant and Michael Waltrip, Elliott led 364 of the 500 laps to collect $83,100, with $15,200 of the amount for winning from the pole position. Elliott was consistently the first car out on pit stops, keeping him up front and ahead of racing action. This is a credit to the crew headed up by Mike Beam, who got his first win as a crew chief as well as Mechanic of the Race award. The #9 car Sunday was a rear steer car with a perfect set up. While Martin, Earnhardt and Wallace used up their tires racing each other, Elliott just pulled away. Awesome Bill had already quali- fied for the Busch Classic at Daytona in February and the win Sunday qualified him for the Winston at Charlotte in May. Martin gained five points over Earnhardt to lead by 21 with only six races remaining for the 1990 season. Bodine is third and Elliott moved past Wallace into fourth po- sition. The Elliott crew has had some good runs this year but always came up short when minor prob- lems would occur. Elliott has seen the front end of a Lumina in his mirror many times this year. Sunday, as he crossed the finish line, his mirror displayed an- other Ford and the front of Earnhardt's Lumina, along with a _ sly grin on the Georgia redhead's face. With only six Winston Cup races remaining, don't miss the opportu- nity to see one. Races coming up in the area are North Wilkesboro September 30, Charlotte October 7 and Rockingham October 21. CAROLINA SPEEDWAY Buddy Smith won the late model race in Gastonia Saturday night. He was followed by Billy Knight, Mike Messer, Lynn Mercer and Steve Stevens. Gene Sanders won the super six- es over Doug Sanders, Will Hobgood, John Pursley and Roger Stone. The super stock went to Ronnie Bolin, who beat Joe Robinson, Ben Sullivan, Tom McCotter and James Galloway. Eddie Spearman took the check- ers ahead of Dale Stiles, Richard Bolin, Jim Wyatt and Marvin Jenkins in the mini stock race. In the street stock, Mickey Barber out ran Todd Bolin, Ricky Taylor, Mike Messer and Tim Waker. David Lindsey won the demoli- tion derby. All drivers received double points for Saturday's races to make up for a rain out on September 8. Racing will begin at 7:30 this week. Gates open at 5 p.m. TRACKING THE SMITHS Think you had a bad weekend? On Friday in Isom, Ky., while watching qualifying for Saturday's race, Naomi Smith, Freddy's wife, fell from a hillside resulting in a compound fracture to her leg. She was taken to a Norton, Va. hospital for surgery which lasted six hours. Back at 2 track, Freddy quali- fied and won his heat race. In the feature race Saturday, Freddy wrecked on lap two causing dam- age to an A-frame and knocking him out of the race. Sunday, Smith was racing at Clay City, Ky., but was forced to retire with an over-heating prob- lem. While all this was taking place, Clarence "Grassy" Smith, Freddy's dad, was admitted to Kings Mountain Hospital's Intensive Care unit. He was transported to the Carolina Heart Institute on Monday. One artery was found to be com- pletely blocked and has been blocked so long the doctors don't intend to treat it. On Tuesday, a balloon treatment was performed to clear two other arteries. A family member said he will be closely monitored to check the success of the treatment. If it is successful, a bypass can be avoid- ed. Then, at Concord Speedway Saturday night in the Big 10 Series Autumn 300, Jeff Smith, Freddy and Naomi's son, was running fifth when a valve spring broke, result- ing in his retirement from the race. Jeff said he had a "bad qualify- ing run" (18th), but had made it back to fifth position. A caution came out around lap 90 and the rocker broke on the re-start. Jeff finished 20th. Of the Smiths bad luck, Jeff's seems to have been the best considering his mother's broken leg and his grandfather's heart complications. Jeff is preparing his All Pro car for the September 29-30 All Pro World 400 Cup in Odessa, Mo. Naomi was released from Wise Memorial Hospital to a local ortho- pedic surgeon early Tuesday morn- ing and is now at home. Grassy, who suffered a heart at- tack in 1962 and another one re- cently while in Las Vegas, now will get his heart rebuilt. One thing is for sure, the first question he will put to the doctors is "how long will it be until I can bet back to my shop?" Grassy has been building engines for grandson Jeff for the past three years.
