FF rw AL Sl Ll RR a CROWDS ATTEND WEST PTO MEETING-The first meeting of the fall of West PTO attracted 325 people who enjoyed a hot dog supper and a humorous program by Reg Alexander of Regal Graphics. Alexander also delighted the audience with musical selec- tions. Prior to the meeting the new principal, Sherrill Toney, en- couraged more involvement by parents in their child's education. HAGER From Page 1-A Administrative office on Parker Street. Before-Care and After-School Care is offered to working parents for their children at each of the ele- mentary schools and this fall for the first time the program will ex- pand to Grover, where Before-Care service will begin at 5:30 a.m. At the other schools, Before-Care starts at 6:30 a.m. After-Care, which includes tutoring homework, art and supervised play, continues when school dismisses until 6 p.m. Cost of the service is $22.50 if the child is at school until 6 p.m. and $15.00 if the child is there until 4:30 p.m. Six people are employed in this program and an outing is held at end of school. Nutritional snacks are included. Sixty K-5 students enjoyed arts, ceramics, math and computer sci- ence in the Summer Enrichment program at Bethware School which enrolled 60 children. With the start of a new school year, Hager is embarking on a pro- gram to get more parent involve- .. ment and Sy more volunteers. WHe'also'Wwants 10 get more business people involved and spread the word in the community that Community Schools program is just that. Hager finished school at the old Reed High School in Belmont, son of Dorothy Hager of Mt. Vernon, N. Y. and the late Roscoe Hager. He received his undergraduate de- gree from Elizabeth City State Teacher's College in elementary education and grammar and com- pleted his graduate work at Western Carolina University, re- ceiving his master's in educational administration. A native of Gaston County, he met his wife, Anna Jane Lennon, in college. She is a fourth grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in Waco with 26 years experience in the class- room. The family includes William Henry Hager II, who graduated N. C. Central University and is a Second Lieutenant in the Army sta- tioned in Fort Sill, Okl.; Marcus Hager, is a graduate student at A&T University, David Hager, a senior at N. C. Central University in Durham; and Darian Hager, a freshman at N. C. Central University. The grandchildren are Francesca Hager, 3, and Christina Hager, 4 . Hager sees the need for more minorities, especially males, in the field of education. He knew he'd probably go into education because he was greatly influenced by high school principal Harry Blue and brick mason Ezra Forney who called him "Henry." During his col- lege career, friends nicknamed him "Bill" and now the name "Hager" suits. Kings Mountain is home to Hager, who at first thought he'd teach one year and return to school and get married. He married in October 1961 after two months on his new job and stayed in Kings Mountain. Active in New Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church, he is a lifelong Democrat and serves as secretary- treasurer of West Precinct. Since he doesn't live inside the city limits, he's never run for office. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't like to win, A 32nd degree Mason, he has been a Boy Scout leader and Cubmaster and served on Boy Scout committees over the years. His interest in kids hasn't been con- fined to the classroom. "I tell kids io make a step forward and not find excuses.” His philosophy is "Find an excuse for doing, not for not do- ing." The family resides at 126 Rollingbrook Road. In his spare time, he reads, listens to music and enjoys sports. He attends school athletic functions and is a fan of the KM Boys Club team. In preparing the annual report for the KM School System, Hager said he he has been impressed with the high quality of leadership in the "It was a tremendous turnout of parents and teachers," he said. From left with Alexander are Jessica Barnette, Wendy Barnette, Hunter Gaffney, Lindsey Gaffney, Rebecca Miller and Shakara Young.
