The last time lead. Hayes threw in several ringers that he thought Big D had never heard of, but the Herald Pub got on the phone with some of the area "bookies" and figured out who's supposed to win. Hayes was seen he was heading south on I-85 with a Winn Dixie grocery bag over his head. He called Monday from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he's vacationing and talking with football experts in the Sunshine State to see if they can figure a way for him to make a run for the top pickin’ spot in the final two weeks of the season. "I want to select the games to be picked this week," Hayes said. "I'm going to stack the deck against Austin." That was okay with the editor, who has a five-game far. Ware, Rogers Share Herald Football Prize Are you ready for this? Fifteen contestants picked 15 of 19 winners in the Herald's football contest last week and after going to the tie-breaker to decide the win- ner, it still ended in a tie. Todd Ware and Roy Rogers, both of Kings Mountain, predicted 41 points on the tie-breaker game (Clemson 24, N.C. State 17) and shared the $100 prize. Other contestants who missed just four games but lost out on the tie-breaker were Danny McAbee (42 points), Virginia Leach (43), Jonie Blanton (43), Paul Godfrey (38), Kitty Cobb (38), Foley Cobb (35), Kim Franks (36), Ken Harrill (34), Deborah Hayes (46), Johnny Jones (47), Scott Batchler (34), Steve Davidson (48), and Betty Webb (31). Winners of last week's games were Kings Mountain over Shelby, Ashbrook over South Mecklenburg, Bandys over West Lincoln, Bunker Hill over Bessemer City, Burns over R-S Central, East Rutherford over North Gaston, Cherryville over Newton-Conover, Maiden over Chase, Alabama over Tennessee, Maryland over Duke, Auburn over Florida State, Clemson over N.C. State, Virginia over Wake Forest, Notre Dame over Miami, Arizona over Southern Cal, Penn State over Boston College, Texas over Arkansas, Washington over Stanford and Illinois over Michigan State. Howze Has Hole-In-One Mitch Howze scored the third hole-in-one of his golfing career Tuesday at Kings Mountain Country Club. Howze used a pitching wedge to ace the 117-yard, par three fifth hole. He was playing in a threesome with Robert Scism and Jack Jackson. Heading into the final two weeks, the editor has a 85-33-2 mark after going 11-3-1 last week. Hayes and Big D are tied at 80-38-2 after going 9-5-1 last week and the guests are 73-45-2 after a 9-5-1 showing by Steady Eddie Sparks of H&R Block fame. This week's guest picker is Kings Mountain Schools Asst. Supt. Ronnie Wilson, who's as good at picking football games as he is school teachers.
