KM Patriots Lose To Shelby Kings Mountain Middle School's football team fell to unbeaten Shelby 50-12 Wednesday at John Gamble Stadium. Coach David Heffner's Patriots, 3-3 overall, were scheduled to end their season yesterday against East Lincoln at Gamble Stadium. Shelby built a 22-0 lead before the Patriots came back to cut the halftime margin to 22-6 on a three- yard scoring run by Jarvis Bell. Kings Mountain's final touch- down came in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard run by Desmond Holland. "I feel like our guys played a good game," said Coach Heffner. "Shelby had given up just 28 points in the previous six games and they just out-manned us. Shelby's prob- ably the best junior high or middle school team I've ever seen. "They were big and quick and had a lot of speed," he added. "Some of the time when I thought Mountaineer Runners Fifth Kings Mountain High's cross country team finished fifth out of six teams in the Pre-Southwestern 3-A Conference meet last Thursday at Shelby. The conference meet is sched- uled for today. Kings Mountain is the defending champion but Shelby and R-S Central are the favorites. Shelby led the way last week with 53 points, followed by the Hilltoppers with 58. KM had 97 points. The Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association (ITCA) invit- ed Jones, a junior at North Carolina, to play in the event as a representative of Region II. Jones is number 36 in the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings. His performance at the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Championships will be a significantly determining factor in the next rankings, which will be released at the end of the fall season. This tournament was inaugurat- ed in 1979 and is the first leg of the ITCA Collegiate Grand Slam.
