A 'RUFF' TIME FOR SHELBY - Kings Mountain's Robbie Ruff (5) turns the corner for a good gain
-against Shelby in Thursday's junior varsity football game at Shelby. Ruff led the rushing for Kings
Mountain in its 19-8 victory. KM is open this week and closes out its season next week at East Rutherford
in a battle for the conference title.
Junior Varsity Whips Shelby
Jerry Black threw a 48-yard
touchdown pass to Sherman
Witcher on the last play of the first
half to spark Kings Mountzin's JV
football team to 2 19-8 victory over
Shelby Thursday night at Shelby's
Blanton Stadium.
The victory gives KM a 3-0 con-
ference and 6-1 overall record
heading into a showdown with East
Rutherford for the JV champi-
onship Thurs., Nov. 1 at East
Rutherford. The Mountaineers
have an open date this week.
Shelby grabbed an early lead
Thursday when the Lions recov-
ered a fumble in the KM end zone.
Shelby tacked on a two-point con-
version for an 8-0 advantage.
Kings Mountain came right
back, though, as Pat Ross returned
the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to
Bumgardner of the Mountaineers.
trim the difference to 8-6.
With 30 seconds remaining in
the half, Shelby was forced to punt
and Black ran it 85 yards for an ap-
parent touchdown. However, a
clipping penalty brought the play
back to the 48. Black then hung up
- a long pass down the KM sidelines
which Witcher caught in stride and
outran the Shelby secondary to
paydirt.
The Mountaineers added their fi-
nal touchdown in the fourth quarter
on a 25-yard run by Robbie Ruff.
Bo Phongsa kicked the extra point.
The Mountaineers finished with
207 yards rushing, led by Ruff with
82 and Ross with 78. Shelby had
only 90 yards total offense.
"Our special teams kind of start-
ed it off for us," said Coach John
"It seems like we've been relying
on them a lot this year. We were re-
al pleased with the way our offense
played in the second half. We
moved the ball and the line
blocked real well. Our kids have
improved each week and it's start-
ing to show."
Bumgardner cited Black and
Ruff for their play in the backfield.
Linemen Tameron Gaines, Scott
Roper and Chris Rider and backs
Marcus Bell and Witcher led the
KM defensive effort.
Bumgardner's team will battle
East Rutherford for the JV crown
for the third straight year
November 1. KM won in 1988 and
East in '89.
"We certainly hope we can go up
there and come back with another
win," he said. "This would be a big
victory for our kids. We're really
excited about it."
