WRECKS OCT. 12 Albert Smarr, of 62 Pine Manor, told investigating Ptl. Jimmy R. West that he lost control of his vehicle when it hit water in the road. The car hit a city utility pole on York Road doing $1000 damage to the vehicle and $500 to the pole. OCT.13 Ptl. Jimmy West reported that Pankaj J. Bhatt, of 506 Marion Street, Shelby, went to sleep at the wheel of this car on Oriental Avenue and struck a 1986 Chevrolet operated by Robert Hillman, Apt. 40 Charles St,., doing a total of $3500 damage. The Hillman vehicle was traveling east on King Street. OCT.14 A 1972 Chevrolet operated by Inez S. Curry, 4909 Barrett Road, backed into a 1971 VW owned by Suzanne * Sipes, 642 Bell Road, in the parking lot at Hardee's, doing a total of $325 dam- age. The Sipes car, operated: by Michael Ray Ball of Oak Grove Road, was stopped in the parking lot behind the Curry car. OCT.15 A City of Kings Mountain mainte- nance truck attempting to jump start a City of KM grader on Oakland Street apparently jumped into gear and backed into the grader, doing $2000 damage to the Ford truck. Roy Lee Mayes, of 509 Stoney Point Road, was operating the 1974 Galliant T500L grader. Sgt. K. M. Simpson was inves- tigating officer. Ptl. Donald Martin said a 1979 Olds operated by Lori Homesley, 249 Sellers, Road, rear-ended a vehicle on Fairview Drive at Linwood Road which left the scene. The Homesley car was dam- aged $900. A 1986 Mercury operated by a 17- year-old student ran the light at S. Cansler and S. City Streets and struck a 1977 Honda operated by Timothy L. Seay, of Route 5, doing a total of $2500. Sgt. K. M. Simpson said the student said he was entering the inter- section when the light turned red and he could not stop. OCT.18 A collision at a driveway involved cars operated by Ruby G. Easter, 124 Tin MIne Road, operating a 1982 Mercury which was damaged $500, and a 1981 Chevrolet Pickup operated by Otis Cole, 1704 Northwoods Drive, which was damaged $1500. Pil. R. W. Thomas said Cole was attempting to make a right turn into a driveway at 1704 Northwoods Drive when the Easter vehicle attempted to go around the vehicle on the right side, causing the two to collide. OCT.19 A 1990 Ford truck TT operated by Michael McAllister of Southbend, Indiana and owned by Gunthers Leasing Transport of Hanover, Md., struck a parked 1981 Ford TT operated by Kenneth L. Wolfe, of Greer, S. C. and owned by Carolina Freight Carriers of Greer, in the truckers park- ing area on York Road. Damages were estimated at $700. McAllister was turning left into the parking lot, ac- cording to Ptl. M.E . Jamerson. A 1987 Ford operated by Patricia E. Gilbert, of 413 Crescent Hill Road, ap- parently pulled into the pathway of a 1987 Ford truck operated by a 17-year- old student at Gold Street and Phifer Road. The Gilbert vehicle had left the stop sign at Gold and Phifer to turn left onto Phifer. The truck was traveling north on Phifer Road, according to in- vestigating Ptl. Benny Melvin.
