Shelby High Production Set Shelby High School's Workshop Theatre will present the one-act musical, "To Whom It May Concern" Wed., Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Intimate Theatre in Brown Auditorium. "To Whom It May Concern" fea- tures a cast of 14 and is a warm and witty observation of what real- ly goes on in the hearts and minds of those attending a church service. The production is the second in a series of one-acts designed to give students in drama and techni- cal theatre classes "hands-on" ex- perience in the theatre arts. The show is directed by Kerry Maher, with musical direction by Michael Sisk and vocal direction by Traci Evans. Jason Wright is stage man- ager with lighting design by Brian Bechtel and technical direction by Rick Hamrick. Tickets are available from cast members or at the door. First Citizens Reports Earnings First Citizens BancShares, Inc., reports record earnings for the third quarter and first nine months of 1990, according to Lewis R. Holding, chairman of the board. Net income for the third quarter totaled $8.1 million, compared to $7.1 million earned during the third quarter of 1989, an increase of 13.7 percent. Per share income for the third quarter totaled 87 cents, up from the 75 cents earned per share in the corresponding peri- od of 1989, an increase of 16 per- cent. The corporation's net earnings totaled $23.2 million for the nine months ended September 30, com- pared to $20.6 million earned dur- ing the nine-month period in 1989, an increase of 12.4 percent. Per share income for the nine-month period totaled $2.49, a 14.7 percent increase from the $2.17 earned per share during the same period last NEVAN E. PHILLIPS year. Holding attributed the increase in third quarter and year to date earnings to loan growth and im- proved net interest yields. As of September 30, First Citizens' assets totaled $4.4 billion, a 23 percent increase over asset levels of $3.6 billion reported for the corresponding period of 1989. Along with internal growth, the bank's assets increased due to the September 21 assumption of de- posits and the acquisition of certain assets of North Carolina Savings and Loan Association, F.A. and Heritage Federal Savings and Loan Associations. First Citizens BancShares, Inc. is the holding company of First Citizens Bank, a statewide finan- cial institution that operates 329 of- fices in 167 North Carolina towns and cities. Nevan Phillips Is One Year Old Nevan E. Phillips, son of Neil and Kellie Phillips of Clover, S.C., was one year old October 5. He was honored with a party at home with family and friends. The decorated clown cake was served with chocolate and straw- berry ice cream with all the trim- mings. Nevan is the grandson of Earl and Charlene Allman of Kings Mountain and Tommy and Marguriete Phillips of Clover, S.C. Also attending the party were several cousins and neighbors. Wright Service Terry Floyd, Service World's 'Best’ Trumpeter To Play In Shelby He's been called one of the world's best trumpeters and he is returning to his hometown of Shelby on Saturday. Johnny Best will bring with him his trumpet and perform as solo trumpeter with the Knights of Music in a benefit performance at Malcolm Brown Auditorium of Shelby Senior High School. The auditorium will resound with the music of the big band era as they play music made famous by such orchestras as Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and others. In the late 1930s and 1940s, Best toured with the orchestras of Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Jerry Gray and Sonny Burke. He has worked with ar- ranger-composer Billy May on recordings with Frank Sinatra, the late Nat King Cole and others. His television credits include Leaf Hike Planned At Crowders Park There will be a leaf hike Sat., Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park, located seven miles east of Kings Mountain off U.S. Highway 29/74. He has researched the Big Band era for a Time-Life collection and toured Japan with the Ray Coniff Orchestra. Best joined the Shelby High School Band in 1926 and played under the direction of W.T. Sinclair. Sinclair recognized Best's talent and began private trumpet lessons with him in 1928. In 1929, Best organized a band called Johnny Best and His Carolina Troubadours. He graduated from Shelby High in 1930. The Knights of Music is a big band in the best tradition of the great orchestras that dominated the American music scene during the "Golden Age of the Big Bands." They play the original arrange- ments and re-create the authentic sounds that made the big bands fa- mous. The night of big band sound will begin at 7 p.m. The school is locat- ed in Shelby on the U.S. 74 bypass. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the door. Proceeds from the tickets will benefit the Youth Assistance Program of Cleveland County (YAP), a Governor's One-on-One Volunteer program. YAP is a pri- vate non-profit organization de- signed to match adult volunteers with young people between the ages of seven and 17 who are re- ferred by juvenile court, law en- forcement officers or other child oriented agencies.
