PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN - Toes H. Rikard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rikard of Kings Mountain, was promoted to Captain in the U.S. Army on September 1. Rikard currently serves as the Battalion Adjutant for the 4th Battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Richardson, Alaska. His principle duties include serving as the primary staff officer overseeing all personnel and ad- ministrative actions for the unit, as well as serving as the Battalion Commander's personal aide. Cpt. Rikard is a 1982 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and earned his B.S. degree in History from Appalachian State University in 1986. Helping with the pro- motion ceremony is his wife, Sandy, and their daughter, Ashley. BAKER AND ROBERT WINGO) The language department of the KMMS has completed many activ- ities within its first nine weeks of school this year. The school is par- ticipating in the following activi- ties: DAR essay contest written on the topic of "What the Bill of Rights Means to Me", the Daily Oral Language program, various vocabulary building activities, the 7th and 8th grade A.G. students at- tended a series of plays at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte called "The Quartet," and the 7th and 8th grade A.G. students are also partic- ipating in the Future Problem Solving Program. The language arts department also has a variety of activities to exercise the proper use of English and its mechanics. The purpose of writing a report about the Bill of Rights is to under- stand the rights and freedoms the United States citizens have. The DAR essay is based this year on what these rights mean to the stu- dents. The essay is written to Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter of Kings Mountain. It cov- ers the first ten amendments. There are minimum word requirements for each of the different age levels in competition. Weaving Workshop Planned Kings Mountain State Park's Living History Farm offers the Beginning Weaving Workshop on Saturday, November 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. The program will include sev- eral textile weaving demonstra- tions, and materials and instruction will be provided to help partici- pants begin a finger-weaving pro- ject that they may finish on their own. Workshop participants must be ages 12 and older, (those between 12 and 16 should be accompanied by an adult enrolled in the work- shop) and should meet at the Homeplace on the Living History Pr -registration for the class is required with a fee of $1.00 per person and should be sent, along with name(s), address, and phone number to Kings Mountain State Park, Rt, 3 Box 532, Blacksburg, S.C., 28702. Halloween At The Farm Set At KM State Park The 1840's Living History Farm at Kings Mountain State Park cele- brates Halloween with a pioneer spirit during "Halloween at the Farm," on Saturday, October 27, beginning at 6:45 PM. The free outdoor program will include stories, games and surpris- es and is suitable for very young children as well as adults. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and a flashlight. Thursday, October 25, 1990 -THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3C Language Students Busy At KMMS The 7th and 8th grade A.G. lan- guage arts classes attended a series of short story plays October 16. The plays were based on the works of four short story writers: Poe, Twain, Hawthorne, and Saki. The following plays were enjoyed: "The Black Cat," "The Cask of Amontillado," "Dr. Heideger's Experiment,” "The Invaild's Tale," and "Louis." The Future Problem Solving teams take current world problems and learn to work as a team to come up with what they feel is the best possible solution to the prob- lem at hand. The team's "packet" of procedures as well as solution is then sent off to compete with all the other schools registered in the competition. Future Problem Solving provides students with many skills in learning who to use - time effectively, in working as a team, and in taking the responsibil- ity of doing ones fair share. The language arts department of KMMS has many activities going on everyday.
