Quilting Winners Named Kings Mountain quilters were among the big winners in the 1990 Foothills Quilters Show in Shelby recently which attracted 157 en- tries. Mrs. Paul McGinnis won the first place award for her white on white sampler quilt in the full-size bed quilt category. She also won second place for her white on white small bed quilt. Phyllis Hamrick of Kings Mountain won third place for her double wedding ring wall hanging. Other awards went to Lorene Hamrick of Shelby, second place, for her wreath of flowers in the full-size bed quilt category and Virginia Drake from Gastonia for her ‘over the rainbow’ design, third place. In the small bed quilt cate- gory. Shirley Runyans of Shelby won first place for her 'hearts and flowers' and Brenda Arrowood of Forest City won third place for ‘heart throw.’ Nancy Abasiekong of Shelby won first place for her wall hang- ing featuring double Irish chain and Grace Withrow of Shelby won second place for her kaleidoscope wall hanging. Eleanor Austin of ] a Rutherfordton's Victorian tree won first place and Shirley Runyans of Shelby and Ruth Watterson of Birmingham, Ala. won second place for Abigail's Country jumper and school day collar. Sherry Spangler won third place for her shadow quilted white skirt and de- tachable collar. Martha And Jackie Short Note 20th Anniversary Martha and Jackie Short cele- brated their 20th wedding anniver- sary Oct. 18 at a family dinner at Paul Hord's Fish Camp. Martha Hicks and Jackie Short met at Deal Street Park and after a courtship were married in Gaffney, South Carolina Oct. 18,1970. Accompanying them to Gaffney were his mother, the late Mrs. Carrie Short, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hicks. The family includes David Short, 17; Larry Short, 15; and three-year-old twins Randy and Cindy Short. Jackie Short has been employed at Anvil Knitwear for six years. A Kings Mountain native, he is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mills Monroe Short. Mrs. Short, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hicks, is also a Kings Mountain native.
