Schools Urge Parent Involvement Parent involvement in their chil- dren's education starts at home, but only when parents and teachers work together can student achieve- ment reach expected goals. "That is why parent-teacher conferences are so critical to the success of our stu- dents," said superintendent Bob McRae. The local public schools are encouraging all parents to have a conference with their children's teachers after the first report cards of the year are issued on Nov. 1st. The push to get parents to attend conferences has always been em- phasized by the local schools, but a statewide parent involvement pro- ject sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction this year has reinforces the local school efforts. Research shows that the home is a very powerful factor in determin- ing student success. "When parents have high expectations for learning and work closely with the schools to help their children reach expect- ed learning goals, we know that achievement levels will increase. Report cards are a measure of stu- dent progress and when teachers get to discuss that progress with parents, they can let parents know what can be done at home. to con- tinue to improve the student perfor- mance," said Dr. McRae. Parents are encourage to use re- port cards in a positive manner with their children, however, and not to let the report trigger emo- tional responses that make the child feel like a failure. Political Advertisement Paid Through Gaston Co-Gop University, points out that report cards can be "an emotional light- ning rod" which can unleash paren- t's anxieties about their social sta- tus and their children's prospects for the future. In some cases the report card can even lead to emotional and physical abuse, according to the state education staff. They warn parents that such reactions can have drastic negative effects and that report cards should only be used to plan ways for correcting problems and to build on success- es. The parent-teacher conference is a time when parents can learn more about using report cards ef- fectively to improve student per- formance. Parents are urged to use report card time to communicate with their children. Suggestions for dis- cussing the report are: «Praise positive aspects of the re- port such as improvement on a giv- en subject, good behavior or good attendance. «Allow the child to explain why he or she feels a grad is less than what it should be and suggest what needs to be done to improve. » Use this time as an opportunity to set new study guidelines and to limit TV viewing time and hours involved in after-school work, if necessary.
