Cashion Claims Third Term
On Cleveland County Board
"I do feel good," Kings Mountain's Joyce Cashion
said Wednesday morning after winning reelection to a
four-year term on the Cleveland County Board of
Commissioners. "I'm always glad when it's over and
the votes are in."
Mrs. Cashion, who runs
Falls Superette on York Road
and has been on the County
Board for six years, ran sec-
ond to first time winner Ralph
Gilbert in a four-person race
for the two available seats.
The terms of the other three
members of the board--
Charlie Harry, Joe Cabaniss
and Jack Spangler--expire in
two years.
Mrs. Cashion, who was first
CASHION elected in 1984 and later ap-
pointed to fill the unexpired term of the late L.E.
"Josh" Hinnant of Kings Mountain, led the voting in
the May Democratic primary. Gilbert won the second
nomination from the Democratic party by winning a
runoff over Dick Kelly.
In Tuesday's voting, in which 24,951 of the county's
39,506 registered voters went to the polls in one of the
heaviest turnouts ever, Gilbert led the way with 13,510
votes. Mrs. Cashion received 13,179, and Republicans

Harris Put Out Of Senate
After 18 Years Of Service
For the first time in 42 years, Ollie Harris is not an
elected official in Cleveland County.
The popular Kings Mountain funeral home owner
lost his bid for reelection to the N.C. Senate Tuesday,
running fourth in a six-person race for three seats from
1 the 25th District.
Republicans John Carter of
Lincolnton and Dr. James
Forrester of Stanley led the
voting, taking away seats
that had been held by Harris
and Senator Marshall Rauch
of Gastonia for over 20
years. Rauch had 24 years in
the Senate and Harris 18.
The only incumbent to win
reelection was Helen Rhyne
Marvin of Gastonia, who ran
third. Harris was fourth,
Rauch fifth and Republican
Mary Lou Craig sixth.
Unofficial vote totals
showed Carter with 54,489, Forrester 53,942, Marvin
49,388, Harris 48,008, Rauch 46,581 and Craig
44 416. ;
However, Harris led in his home county of
Cleveland, getting 15,032 votes to 12,176 for Marvin,
11,436 for Rauch, 11,494 for Carter, 7,447 for Craig
and 9,513 for Forrester.

Fund Nearing Goal
Kings Mountain United Fund is inching closer and closer toward its
goal of $127,500.
Chairman Glenn Anderson reported today that pledges and contribu-
tions to date total $113,606, or 89 percent of the goal. Anderson has ex-
tended the campaign through the middle of November.
"We've made considerable progress during the last week," he said.
"We certainly feel like we're within striking distance of the goal."
Anderson said the commercial division increased its total by $2,800
during the past week and Kings Mountain Hospital increased its total
from $3,000 to $4,090.

Weatherly 200 Votes Short
In Bid For 2nd House Term
Kings Mountain's John Weatherly hopes Thursday's
vote canvass will allow him to call for a recount of
Tuesday's votes, but it appears the first time State
House Representative has been defeated.
1 In unofficial tabulations
from the 48th House
District, Weatherly ran
fourth in a six-person field
for three seats. Incumbent
Democrats Jack Hunt and
Edith Lutz of Cleveland
County won reelection with
25,618 and 25,026 votes, re-
spectively, and Democrat
William "Bill" Withrow re-
ceived 21,738 votes to
Weatherly's 21,538 to edge

the third seat.
Republicans Tony Helton and Richard "Dick"
Hoagland, both of Rutherford County, brought up the
rear with 17,347 and 14,037 votes, respectively.
"It looks like I've lost by 200 votes," Weatherly said.
"Of course, after the canvass if it's less than one per-
cent there should be a recount.”
Weatherly recently completed his first two-year
term in the House, becoming the first Republican ever
to represent the 48th District. He ran third in his home
county of Cleveland and led the ticket in small Polk
County, but a strong Democratic turnout in Rutherford

KM People Help 'Desert Shield’
Ordinarily we fill our stockings
for Christmas. But last week Kings
Mountain people were filling shoe
boxes.
Those boxes were filled with
items from kool-aid to Calvin
Klein cologne. A total of 65 shoe
boxes from Kings Mountain were
dropped off at Friendship Baptist
Church in Belmont and from there
they will be sent to our men and
women in the Armed Forces in
Saudi Arabia.
This operation, called G.I. Love
U, was made possible in Kings
Mountain by members of Second
Baptist and East Gold Street
Wesleyan churches, who solicited
individuals and businesses for
items to fill be boxes.
"Ms. Jean" the clown (Jean
McAbee) collected items for the
boxes.
"I do not have anyone in this
Operation Desert Shield, but my
heart went out to the families that
do as I prepared the boxes," she
said. "Our love and prayers go in

BOXES FILLED WITH ITEMS FOR SOLDIERS
Kings Mountain and Cleveland County voters
joined the rest of the state in reelecting U.S. Senator
Jesse Helms in somewhat of a surprise in Tuesday's
General Election. + ;
The Republican Senator led from the outset to turn
back the efforts of former Charlotte Mayor Harvey
Gantt. Unofficial results which were still not complete
early Wednesday morning because of voting machine
problems in; Durham and Guilford counties showed
Helms winning by a 52 to 48 percent margin.
In Cleveland County, traditionally a Democratic
county, Helms received 13,028 votes to 11,153 for
Gantt. :
Speaking on live TV hookup from his campaign
headquarters in Raleigh, the often controversial
Senator Helms quipped, "Well, there is no joy in
Mudville tonight. The mighty ultra liberal establish-
ment, and the liberal editors and columnists have
struck out again."
Survey polls on the day before the election showed
Gantt leading Helms by four to six percent.
In the other major race in this area, 10th District
Congressman Cass Ballenger easily won reelection
over Democrat Dan Green. Ballenger received 69,526
votes (61 percent) to Green's 43,538 (39 percent).
The biggest surprise locally was in the 25th
Senatorial District where two Democrats with over 40
years experience--Marshall Rauch and Ollie Harris--
were defeated by two Republican newcomers. Rauch
had spent 24 years in the Senate and was said to be the
most powerful Senator in Raleigh, and Harris had
served 18 years.
Former Charlotte TV personality John Carter of
Lincoln, Dr. James Forrester of Stanley and incumbent
Democrat Helen Rhyne Marvin won the three seats.
Carter received 54,489 votes, Forrester 53,942, Marvin
