In Cleveland County, traditionally a Democratic county, Helms received 13,028 votes to 11,153 for Gantt. : Speaking on live TV hookup from his campaign headquarters in Raleigh, the often controversial Senator Helms quipped, "Well, there is no joy in Mudville tonight. The mighty ultra liberal establish- ment, and the liberal editors and columnists have struck out again." Survey polls on the day before the election showed Gantt leading Helms by four to six percent.
