YOUR LOCAL UNITED WAY SERVICES THESE AGENCIES
AMERICAN RED CROSS
Provides emergency assistance to victims of disaster; arranges communication
between servicemen and their families; saves lives through the blood program, first
aid classes, cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes and water safety classes.
MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION HELPING HAND FUND AND CHAPLAIN
SERVICE
The helping hand fund provides assistance, on a short-term, emergency basis, to
individuals not able to qualify for government supported programs. The Association
provides medicine, groceries, and other forms of assistance to families in this area.
The association also provides a chaplain at the Kings Mountain Hospital.
GIRL SCOUTS - PIONEER COUNCIL
An informal, education program dedicated to the purpose of inspiring girls with the
highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service that they may become
happy and resourceful citizens. In the Kings Mountain/Grover area, 254 girls are
served in 11 troops.
BOY SCOUTS - PIEDMONT COUNCIL
Trains boys 7-21 years old in leadership, citizenship, physical fitness, and
character development. In the Kings Mountain/Grover area, 260 youth are served
in 11 units.
KINGS MOUNTAIN RESCUE SQUAD
The Kings Mountain Rescue Squad provides free service in event of auto, boating,
and fire emergencies. Funds from the United Way are used to purchase and update
equipment.
CLEVELAND COUNTY SHELTER HOME
This home, located in Shelby, provides a temporary home for children from all
parts of Cleveland County who, for various reasons, have been displaced until
permanent arrangements can be made.
KINGS MOUNTAIN BOYS CLUB
Promotes the social, educational, recreational, vocational, health and character
development of boys 7-18 years old through daily guidance-oriented classes and
services. 310 enrolled members in Kings Mountain.
GROVER RESCUE SQUAD
All volunteers, they devote time and ability to the people in Grover/Kings Mtn. and
surrounding areas, insuring the citizens of assistance in cases of emergency.
Vehicles are operated on a donation basis only. Funds from the United Way are
used to purchase equipment necessary for rescue operations.
CODAP
CODAP was formed to attack the problem of drug abuse in Cleveland County.
CODAP is attempting to lessen the number of youth entering drug dependency by
establishing public school drug education programs, Grades K-12, Stress Manage-
ment for College Bound Seniors, Teacher Workshops, and Parent Education,
within the framework of health education instruction.
"SALVATION ARMY
Serves the entire county with physical assistance in emergency situations and at
Christmas, rendering spiritual and counseling assistance; conducts character
building activities for all ages.
CLEVELAND COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION
Provides money for Cleveland County residents at Broughton and Western
Carolina Center at Morganton and Black Mountain. Provides snacks for children at
the Children's Center in Shelby (trainable mentally handicapped). Is involved with
Special Olympics at Gardner Webb and sponsors adults at First Baptist Church
Day Care Center for mentally handicapped :
HOSPICE
A specialized health care program dealing with the terminally ill patient and his
family. Services include: Skilled nursing care, family counseling, clergy support,
bereavement counseling and community education.
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
CLEVELAND VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIES
Serves adult developmentally disabled citizens. The facility is a training center
concentrating on self help activities through sub - contracting work.
CLEVELAND COUNTY ABUSE PREVENTION COUNCIL
A comprehensive program add ressing the issue of violence against women. Some
of the services are: 24-hour crisis line, temporary shelter, information and referral,
service, individual counseling and support services.

KINGS MOUNTAIN MINISTERAL ASSOCIATION CRISIS CENTER
