The system hopes to complete the new classroom and administration building at Grover School early next year, and a similar building will soon be under construction at East School. It is anticipated that the East project will be completed next summer. The only major building project remaining in the system's improve- ment package, which was made possible because of two half-cent sales taxes and the recent passage of a countywide bond referendum, is a new main building at West School. There are also some minor renovations planned at North School. Supt. McRae said the board an- ticipates naming an architect for the West project at its January meeting, which will be held on January 10. The board is consider- ing tearing down and replacing the "old building" at West which in- cludes the administration offices, library, cafeteria and classrooms. "We have debated whether to tear it down or just tear down the back three fourths of the building," McRae said. "I think it probably makes sense, funds provided, to go ahead and replace the whole build- ing. It may be just as cheap to do that." West students will attend school FORMER PARISHONERS at Central next year while their new building is under construction. In other matters Thursday night, the board: *Adopted a resolution honoring Senator Ollie Harris for his years of service to the school system as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly. *Heard a report from the School Improvement team. *Named Billy King chairman and Priscilla Mauney vice-chair- man for 1991. *Changed the January board meeting to Thurs., Jan. 10. *Approved a change in the school calendar which allows teachers at the high school, middle school, East and Grover to change an optional workday because of ex- tra work they did at the beginning of the year because of new build- ing construction. * Approved a resolution of sup- port for the Communities in Schools project, a countywide ef- fort aimed at identifying at risk children more accurately and pro- viding more services to them. *Approved the following per- sonnel items: Interim contracts for Becky Johnson and Amy Ross; part-time employment for Lucille Brown, East cafeteria; leave of ab- sence for Ethel Crocker and Bonnie Bryson, teacher assistants at Grover; accepted the resignation of Donna Smart, custodian, Bethware.
