Local post offices, including Kings Mountain, will have applica- tions available February 19-March 4 for the exam for a clerk-carrier for the Charlotte area. Starting pay is $12.25 per hour plus postal ben- efits. Local post offices also have ap- plications for a mail handler's exam for the Charlotte Post Office. Those applications were closed February 8 but have now been ex- tended through May 17. Starting pay is $11.60 per hour plus postal benefits. Postal regulations prohibit post offices from giving out applica- tions on dates other than those list- ed above. Becker To Be Guest On Late-Night Show Gretchen Becker of Kings Mountain will appear on Rick Dees Late Night TV Show Thursday night at 12:30 p.m. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Becker of Gold Run, plays a spy in her first big role in the movies, "Firehead." The film was shot in Mobile, Ala. in 1989 and premiered in Mobile January 23. Becker's co-star, Martin Landau, will also be a guest on the show. AARP To Meet Next Tuesday The Kings Mountain Chapter of AARP will hold its regular month- ly meeting February 19 at 3 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Depot Center. President Bill Alexander will preside. A covered dish meal will be served. The Board of Directors will meet at 2 p.m. in the upper dining room. Members may renew their mem- berships by paying at the meeting or going by the AARP office at the Depot. TULTEX EARNINGS UP - Tultex Corporation reported record sales and increased earnings for the fiscal year ended December 29, 1990. For the 12 months, sales were $355,117,000 compared with $334,020,000 in 1989. Net income was $23,470,000, or 85 cents per share, compared with $5,034,000, or 18 cents per share, for the prior year. ATTENDS CONVENTION - Joe Goforth, General Manager of the Cleveland County Fair, attend- ed the N.C. Association of Agriculture Fairs convention in Greensboro recently. Cleveland County fair received the first place agriculture fair award and second place premium book award. The 1991 fair, which will run Sept. 26- Oct. 5, is already being planned. H.E.L.P. PROGRAM - H.E.L.P,, a parent support group for children with learning disabili- ties, will meet Tues., Feb. 19 at 7:30 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 300 N. LaFayette St., Shelby. Rev. D.C, Wilson and Rev. S. W.%\lexander officiated. A native of York County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Lucie Lomick and Charlie Ashley. She was a member of Good Hope Presbyterian Church and also at- tended Ebenezer Baptist Church of Kings Mountain. In New Jersey for many years she was a member of Clinton Avenue Presbyterian Church and was a deacon, member of Helping Hands Circle, and a member of Eastern Star Adah Chapter 7 and Friendly Aid. Surviving are her husband, Manie Roseboro; daughter, Allene A. Sellers; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. RUTH H. MARKAS Graveside services for Mrs. Ruth Harmon Markas, 90, of Methodist Retirement Home, Durham, who died February 8, 1991 at Duke Medical Center, were conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery by Rev. Bob Little. A native of Kings Mountain, she was widow of John Mitchell Markas and daughter of the late Lee Alexander and Mary Elizabeth Harmon. She was a member of Benson Memorial Methodist Church in Durham. Surviving are her son, John Mitchell Markas Jr. of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Patricia Ann Markas of Raleigh and Mary Markas Cline of Shelby; three grandchildren and two great-grand- children.
