Rescuers celebrate anniversary ‘GROVER-From humble begin- nings in the old Town Hall 31 years ago, Grover Rescue Squad has emerged as Cleveland County's first paramedics and today occupy a handsome building with the finest equipment. "We've come a long way," said Postmaster Fain Hambright, the squad's first captain who served during the infancy years of the de- partment in 1960 and was succeed- ed in 1970 by Buren Randle, then by Harold Watkins, Don Dingus, Tony Anthony, Jackie McMurray and Jeff Cash. The former captains, the present squad, and old-timers came home Sunday for a birthday celebration in which they and other residents of the community cut a decorated birthday cake. Former Senator J. Ollie Harris, who was praised as one of the organizers of the squad, was a special guest. Some of the original equipment, CB units used in the 1960's, were on display as well as newspaper clippings and pictures detailing the history of the volunteer rescue squad which was approved last year as Cleveland County's first team of paramedics. "We had to bring our own CB radio when we came to the Town Hall for first meetings of the Rescue Squad," recalled Randle, who said the first ambulance was an old 1948 Cadillac. According to the minutes of the meetings, the squad was organized and a first aid course was held at Town Hall April 15, 1960 with 21 members. The new building was started in 1961 with $100 in the bank and a $8,000 note from the Bank of Blacksburg. Randle recalls he at- tended numerous dances, softball games, and suppers for which pro- ceeds went to the building fund.
