MRS. LUE ELLEN WILLIS was married to Carrie Bolt
SHELBY-Mrs. Lue Ellen Chalmers, who survives, and was
Beaver Willis, 71, of 1300
Cambridge Drive,died May 12,
1991 at home.
* A native of Blairsville, Ga., she
was widow of Howard Daniel
Willis and daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. John Willis.
Surviving are one son, Joe
Daniel Willis of Greensboro; one
daughter, Ms. Martha Willis of
Forest City; one sister, Mrs. Ruby
Thomas of Buford, Ga.; eight
grandchildren and 10 great-grand-
children.
The funeral was conducted May
14, 1991 at 2 p.m. at Lutz-Austell
Chapel. Rev. Keys Pendleton offi-
ciated. Burial was in Sunset
Cemetery. :
EVELYN C.WILDER
ASHEVILLE-Mrs. Evelyn C.
Wilder, 75, of 420 Lady
Huntingdon Lane, died May 11,
1991 at home after a lengthy ill-
ness.
A native of Plant City, Fla., she
had lived at Givens Estates since
1988. She was wife of Rev. James
M. Wilder, pastor of Kings
Mountain Baptist Church from
1966-73. She was daughter of the
late Vernon C. and Annie B.
Collins.
A graduate of Florida State
. College for Women (now FSU)
and Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Louisville, Ky., she
was a pastor's wife, living in
Pageland, S. C., Newton, Kings
Mountain and Charlotte. She
taught at Myers Park High School
in Charlotte for many years and
was a professor at Gardner-Webb
* College in Boiling Springs and at
Sacred Heart College in Belmont.
She was active in civic and cultural
groups in all of the cities where her
husband was pastor and was a
member of Arden First Baptist
Church. ;
Surviving, in addition to her
husband, are two sons, Collins
Wilder of Charlotte and David
Wilder of Knoxville, TN.; one
daughter, Carolyn Grey Galanga of
Covington, La.; two sisters, Viola
Waldorf of Zebulon and Vernelle
Noyes of Santa Barbara, CA.; one
brother, Chester Yates of
Gainesville, Fla; and four grand-
children, Craig and Grey Falanga
of Louisiana and Melinda and
Bryan Wilder of Arizona.
. The memorial service was con-
ducted May 13, 1991 at 3 p.m. at
Thomas Coke Memorial Chapel at
Givens Estates.
The family requests that instead
of flowers memorials be given to
Mountain Area Hospice, Box 16,
Asheville, N. C., 28802, Arden
First Baptist Church, Sweeten
Creek Rd.. Arden, N.C., or to the
charity of the donor's choice.

John Thompson Chalmers, 85,
former resident of Wilmington,
died May 12, 1991 at Kings
Mountain Convalescent Center.
A native of Abbeville, S.C., he

"My goal when I came here was basically to lead
the congregation in sacrificing and giving if they
wanted a a new church. All members make the
church what it is today," said Simmons.
During his tenure with the local church, Simmons
was also instrumental in the organization of the
Crisis Ministry of the Kings Mountain Ministerial
Association. He has served as president of the associ-
ation several years and usually cooks sausage bis-
cuits and gravy for the ministers when they meet at
his church.
Simmons’ first pastorate was at High Pine
Wesleyan Church, a small country church in
Asheboro. He met his wife in 1951 when he went to
work as a carpenter and in a hosiery mill there. After
becoming good friends with his future father-in-law
who was boarding at the same boarding house, he
son of the late Calvin and Etta
Lominick Chalmers. He was a re-
tired textile executive.
Surviving, in addition to his
wife, are three sons, Joe Chalmers
of North Augusta, S.C., John.
Chalmers of Raleigh and David
Chalmers of Wilmington; three
daughters, Joyce Brooks of
Orangeburg, S.C., Miriam Smith of
Norfolk, Va. and June Lee of Kings
Mountain; 15 grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted May
15, 1991 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist
Church. Dr. J. W. Sloan officiated.
Burial was in Mountain Rest
Cemetery.

- MATTIE BUMGARDNER
Mattie Lou Powell Bumgardner,
65, of 408 Tate Terrace, died May
8, 1991 at Kings Mountain
Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County,
she was daughter of Fonia Dysart
Powell of Gastonia and the late
Martin L. Powell. . She was a re-
tired textile employee and a mem-
ber of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her
mother, are one brother, Billy Gene
Powell of Shelby; one sister,
Joanna Powell Rieks of Gastonia;
and several nieces and nephews. A
brother, Andrew "Jack" Powell,
preceded her in death.
The funeral was conducted May
11, 1991 at Lutz-Austell Funeral
Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Rev.
Donald Denton officiated. Burial
was in Oak Grove United
Methodist Church Cemetery.
ELAINE D. POWERS
SHELBY-Mrs. Elaine Denton
Powers, 70, of 825 Main St., died
May 7, 1991 at home.
A native of Cleveland County,
she had retired from Hewlett
Manufacturing Company in
Cherryville after 11 years of em-
ployment. She was widow of
Robert Powers. She was a member
of First Baptist Church and volun-
teered with the elderly and mental-
ly handicapped program of the
church.
Surviving are one son, Miles
Glasbrooks of Winter Haven, Fla.;
one daughter, Mrs. Iva Blanton of
‘Shelby; one stepson, Jack Denton
of Gaffney, S . C.; one brother, Bob
Fortenberry of Parrish, Texas; four
grandchildren, John Glasbrooks of
York, Melinda Blanton and
Amanda Blanton, both of Shelby,
Niki Shaw of Winter Haven, Fla.;
one great-grandchild, Ashley
Glasbrooks of York, S.C.
The funeral was conducted May
10, 1991 at 11 a.m. at Lutz Austell
Chapel. Burial was in Cleveland

BIKE RODEO SATURDAY -The Battleground District of the
Boy Scouts is sponsoring a bicycle safety rodeo Saturday at
Cleveland Mall to test the riding and safety skills of bike riders of all
ages. Safety information and training for parents will be available
and the prizes pictured above, plus many more, will be given away.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the rodeo events begin at 10. A
present must accompany each rider and register with them.

Trash dump receives permit
The State Department of
Transportation has approved a
“driveway permit for Cleveland
County at the site of the proposed
Midpines manned garbage site.
The city is making several recom-
mendations to DOT in regards to
the site, says Community Services
Director Tom Howard.
Howard said the city has asked
the state to set a 35 m.p.h. speed
limit on Midpines Road and install
a deaccleration lane or turning lane
from Margrace Road to take care

GROVER-Town Board at a spe-
cial meeting last week authorized
the purchase of $6,989 worth of
grass seed to sow Brice Harry

At Tuesday's regular meeting,
council members discussed fencing
of heavy truck traffic and "cuing of
vehicles."
The city has also called attention
to DOT that no fire hydrants are
currently located on Midpines
Road.
Midpines is in the city's one mile
zoning/planning area.
Howard made the recommenda-
tions in a letter to DOT officials re-
cently.

jacent to the old dumn.

City to hold

A public auction of old vehicles
and city equipment will be held
Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at
Public Works back yard.
An assortment of items will be
available, including some recre-
ational equipment, old vehicles,
typewriters and related equipment.

Simmons’ life during his youth but the call from God
kept returning to him. It was after he married Annie
Christine Parks that he answered the call to become
a preacher.
"The Lord has blessed our efforts over the years,"
says Simmons, who says he will miss the close rela-
tionship with East Gold church and the many friends
in the community. His son, Allen Davis Simmons,
will continue to reside in Gastonia.
"I'm just a simple guy,” says Simmons, who plans
to relax more in his woodworking shop. He will

church office, fish and golf a little to celebrate his
61st birthday and 36th wedding anniversary in June
