Kings Mountain High School teachers Annette Parker and Michelle Sivy have won class- room mini-grants for the 1991-91 school year from Kings Mountain District School's Educational Foundation. The grants for $200 each will be used by Parker to finance a trip for her Advanced Junior English stu- dents to Asheville where they will visit Thomas Wolfe's and Carl Sandburg's homes and by Sivy to perform genetic experiments with | Wisconsin Fast Plants in her biolo- | gy class where students grew and cross pollinated wild and mutant plants. The Sivy class completed cross- es of several generations to trace characteristics passed from one _ generation to another. . The Parker class has been study- a KMHS teachers win mini-grants ing a unit on North Carolina au- thors and the 45 students culmi- nate the project Friday with a trip to the mountains. The students have studied both Wolfe and Sandburg and have read other books and performed creative act- ing in the classroom to illustrate the books. Parker traveled in seven countries in Europe last summer. She visited Anne Franck's home- place and also homes of New England authors. A KMHS teacher for 21 years, Parker is a graduate of Shelby High School and received her B. S. in English and her Master's in Higher Education from Appalachian State University. She is chairman of the English Department at KMHS. Her hobbies are traveling and reading and she _enjoys membership in Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and is active in the Humane Society. Sivy has taught biology for three years at. KMHS and prior to that taught in Houston, Texas. She en- joys hiking, biking and camping and says North Carolina offers many opportunities for these out- door activities. Educational |: Green is ECU graduate Amy Green's love affair with ed- ucation began around the family supper table with her parents and five older siblings. The 21-year-old daughter of Frances Green and the late Bud Green is the last child in the family to earn her degree and is still studying. This summer she will work in a graduate program with National Universidad in Costa Rica and East Carolina University at the Universidad National. The ECU group will stay for a month with Costa Rican families as they study under a specialized staff headed by ECU professor Dr. Vi Rosenfeld. The courses will include formal lectures in the classroom and stu- dent assigned observations in the Costa Rican school system. A 1987 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a 1991 graduate of ECU with majors in Home Economics and education, Amy will work under the close su- pervision of her ECU advisor Dr. Vi Rosenfeld in Costa Rica. "I went to Costa Rica last year for two weeks to visit the school sys- tems. This year the program struc- ture is more specialized for class- room work and actual observation participation in the school systems of Costa Rica. I'm really excited to begin my graduate work. It's going to be a thrilling experience for me," she said. Amy completed school on a full veterans' scholarship and also worked in a Greenville depart- ment store as a seamstress.
