Obituaries A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, July 11, 1991 : JAKE ELMORE SHELBY - Jake Lee Elmore, 63, of 704 West Oak Street, died July 2, 1991 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Forest City, he was the son of the late Ralph and Cordelia Hamrick Elmore. He was retired as market manager for A&P. He is survived by his daughter,’ Mrs. Sandra Wise of Oraville, California; a brother, Bobby Elmore of Pinehurst; a sister, Betty Windley of Gastonia; and three grandchildren. The funeral was held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lutz-Austell Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. PARTICIA COE GASTONIA - Particia Coe Patterson, 54, died June 29, 1991 in Pompano Beach, Fla., where she was a resident. Mrs. Patterson was the widow of the late Donald Preston Patterson St., formerly of Kings Mountain. She is survived by her sons, Robert Patterson of Orland, Ind., and Donald P. Patterson Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; and her mother, Loretta Coe of Pompano Beach. A memorial service was held July 2 in Pompano Beach. Burial was in Orland, Ind. HAZEL McCURRY Hazel Verleen McCurry, 60, of 203 Thornburg Drive, Kings Mountain, died July 2, 1991 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ila Bell Slayton. She was a textile employee and a mem- ber of East King Mountain Church of God. She is survived by her sons, Alfred Foster of Bessemer City and Jerry Foster and Jeffrey Graham of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Linda Foster of Kings Mountain; a broth- er, Paskell Slayton of Kings Mountain; and eight grandchildren, The funeral was conducted by the Rev. John Heath Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. JONAH BLACKBURN CHERRYVILLE - Jonah Hall Blackburn, 68, of Highway 274, North, died July 6, 1991 at Carolina Care Center. ‘A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Oscar and Ocie Mae Mitchem Blackburn. He was retired as owner and operator of Shake Shop in Cherryville. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of - American Legion Post 100 and the DAV. He was a World War II veter- an of the Army Air Corp. He is survived by his wife, Emestine Friday Blackburn of the home; three sons, Larry H. Blackburn and Douglas B. Blackburn of Cherryville and William T. Blackburn of Laurens, S.C.; a step-son, Steve Boyles of Cherryville; a step-daughter, Judy Mcginnis of Cherryville; seven grandchildren; and four step-grand- children. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Gibson Monday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Highway 274 North, Cherryville, 28021. JIMMIE H. ALLISON MOORESBORO - Jimmie H. Allison, 72, of 2422 Gaffney Road, died July 6, 1991 at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Summie H, and Daisy Humphries Allison, He was retired owner of the Shoe Shop, which he operated for 50 years. He was a member of Camps Creek Baptist Church where he served as honorary deacon, a mem- ber of Keith Hammett Sunday School class which he served as secretary, and a member of the N.C. Association of the Deaf. He was a graduate of N.C. School for the Deaf. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Audell Allison of #1 Township, Mooresboro; two nephews, Darrell and Doyne Allison of #1 Township, Calligraphy envelopes do: rents 739-0806 Mooresboro; and three great nieces, Bethany, Bonnie and Robin Allison of #1 Township, Mooresboro. His brother was the late Raymond R. Allison. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Keith Dixon and Glenn Jackson Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lutz-Austell Chapel. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial Park. MILDRED CAMPBELL GROVER - Mrs. Mildred Hamrick Campbell, 44, of 925 Bethlehem Church Road, died July 4, 1991 at Santara Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, Va. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Howard and Fannie McNeely Hamrick of Kings Mountain. She was em- ployed as a twister tender at TNS Mills in Blacksburg, S.C. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Rusty Smith of Grover; two daughters, Amy Graham and Penny Stroup of Grover; a brother, Tim Hamrick of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Gail Carpenter of Kings Mountain and Dot Fitch of Waco; and two grand- children. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Ron Caulder and Sam Snyder Monday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial Park. J.Y. PATTERSON MORGANTON - James Yancey Patterson, 81, of Britthaven Nursing Home, formerly of Earl, died July 7, 1991 at Grace Hospital. A native of Clover, S.C., he was the son of the late William Thomas and Loula Gibson Patterson. He was a retired contractor and mem- ber of New Hope Baptist Church in Earl. He is survived by two sons, Larry Jackson Patterson of Cherryville and James William Patterson of Shelby; a brother, Albert Patterson of Shelby; two sisters, Kathleen Hamby of Earl and Sara M. Bridges of Union, S.C.; and three grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. David Gordon Tuesday at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 116, Earl 28038. LANDRUM ALLEN SHELBY-Landrum Jackson Allen, 80, of 2409 Kings Rd., died July 8, 1991 at Kings Mountain Convalescent Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was husband of Louise Boheler Allen, who survives, and son of the late John and Everlena Allen Allen. He was retired from J &C Dyeing and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Army in the 741st Tank Batallion during World War II. Surviving are three sons, Keith Allen of the home; Jack Allen Jr. of Cherryville and Darrell Allen of Shelby; one daughter, Gayla Allen Fraser of Shelby; five sisters, Mrs. Hugh Spangler, Mrs. J. D. Ware, Ruth Howe, Margaret Bodenhamer and Libby Allen, all of Shelby; and six grandchildren, Joel and Kara Fraser, Derek and Sarah Allen, Lan and Kelly Allen. The funeral was conducted July 9 at 4 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church. Rev. Jeff Brendle officiat- ed. Interment was in Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Elizabeth Baptist Church, 301 N, Post Rd., Shelby, 28150. DONALD PENNINGTON HICKORY - Donald Edward Pennington, 40, of 1512 23rd Av. Ct., died July 3, 1991 at Bowman- Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem. A Cleveland County native, he was the son of the late Paul Pennington and Lela Rippy Pennington of Blacksburg, S.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawndale and was an employee of Whiting Hosiery Mills Inc. of Hickory. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Todd Pennington and Richard Pennington of Blacksburg, S.C.; a brother, Randy Pennington of Blacksburg, S.C.; two sisters, Paulette Pennington of Spartanburg, S.C., and Regina P. Bumgardner of Cherryville; and one grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Vernon Craig Friday at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church near Blacksburg. Burial was in the church cemetery. JOHN OATES JR. John Milton Oates Jr., 81, for- merly of Kings Mountain, died July 3, 1991 at Wesley Nursing Center. A native of Kings Mountain, he was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Milton Oates Sr. He was re- tired from Dover Mill in Shelby af- ter 40 years. Survivors include one son,” Robert Milton Oates of Mt. View, Ark.; one daughter, Suzie Sisk of Charlotte; and five grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Rev. John W. Futterer officiated. Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
