Steve Adams, Angier, N.C., report- ed theft of a radar detector from his truck parked at Holiday Inn and $95 damage to the truck door. KM Express, King St., reported two incidents of larceny of beer worth $14.59. Rick's Ole Country Store, Cherryville Rd., reported that a tele- phone booth ripped from its founda- tion caused $500 damage. James Tinsley, 114 Cleveland Ave., Grover, reported that his truck was damaged $1200 while parked at Emergency Service parking lot at KM Hospital. . Bobby Joe Duncan, 601 Mica St., reported larceny of a Remington semi- automatic rifle during a break-in at his residence. Carolina Cafe, 504 S. Cansler St., reported that snack foods and miscella- neous items were taken during a break- in. Police recovered a 13-inch TV set and floor fan from bushes behind the building. Winn Dixie, KM Plaza, reported steaks and hams were taken by a cus- tomer concealing the foods in his clothing. Linda Skimmiehorn, 1316 S. Post Rd., Shelby, reported theft of a shoul- der bag containing personal papers. Corinth Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, reported vandalism. Bobby Eugene Bridges, 215 Jim Patterson Rd., reported theft of his wal- let from his 1989 Toyota truck. KM Community Center, 208 Cleveland Ave, reported a missing money bag containing currency. The bag was taken from a file cabinet in the building. Bunch Inc., 3000 Margrace Rd., re- ported theft of a $300 stainless steel dye yarn carrier during a break-in. Betty Sue Garrett, 211 Sims St., re- ported theft of a .38 caliber revolver handgun during a break-in and damage to bookcase moulding and pink dog- wood tree. Western Auto, 235 Cherokee St., re- ported a customer passed a forged $279 U.S. Treasury check. WRECKS JULY 23 A 1979 Ford operated by Barbara Pauline Bailey, York, S.C. turned in front of a 1985 Dodge operated by Cheryl Costner Johnson, 1207 Suzanne St., on Phifer Road. Sgt. K. M. Simpson said that Bailey and her 10- months-old daughter were transported to Kings Mountain Hospital and both the driver and a passenger in the Johnson car complained of injuries. Property damages were estimated at $3500 to the Bailey vehicle and $6000 to the Johnson car. McDaniel sentenced in murder case Former Kings Mountain resident Mark McDaniel, 37, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder in the January 26 shooting death of Richard Allen Phillips, 29, also formerly of Kings Mountain. McDaniel, sentenced on Friday to 25 years in prison on a cocaine traf- ficking charge, won't be eligible for pa- role for 20 years. The sentences will run concurrently. McDaniel's attorney said both sen- tences would automatically be ap- pealed to the South Carolina Supreme Court. Judge James B. Stephens sentenced McDaniel to the mandatory life term in Cherokee County General Sessions Court. The jury deliberated 2 1/2 hours and returned the verdict late Thursday following a three-day trial. Stephens on Thursday denied public defender Don Letteer's motion for a new trial. Fire destroys vacant house Fire of suspicious origin de- stroyed a vacant house at 402 ‘Walnut Street Friday at 2:25 a.m. . Officials said the house had been ‘vacant for some time. Firemen fought the blaze for more than four hours. The Cleveland County Fire Marshal is investigating. McDaniel was charged with killing Phillips January 26 at McDaniel's mo- bile home near Blacksburg. McDaniel claimed he fired in self-defense. He ad- mitted shooting Phillips three times with a .380 caliber pistol in what he said was an effort to protect himself from a possible attack by Phillips and another man, Gary Martin Fowler Jr. of Route 2, Bessemer City. A fourth fatal "J. Ben shot to the back of Phillips’ head was accidental, McDaniel claimed, when Phillips grabbed the gun barrel. Fowler, the state's key witness, tes- tified that he hadn't known Phillips be- fore the night of the shooting. Police found 8 ounces of cocaine buried near McDaniel's house during the investigation.
