Gaston Day
scores high
GASTONIA-Students at Gaston
Day School scored in the top 20
percent in the nation among stu-
dents taking the 1991 California
Achicvement Test (CAT).
The CAT is a standardized test
used across the nation to measure
student achievement and progress.
The test is administered annually to
all third, sixth and eighth graders.
The average score of Gaston
Day's third graders was in the 93
percentile. Sixth graders averaged
83, and eighth graders averaged 92.
Both the sixth and the eighth
grade average scores showed in-
creases over 1990 test scores, from
76 to 83 for sixth graders and from
88 to 92 for eighth. the third grade
average dropped slightly from 96
to 93.
Headmaster Philip Brady at-
tributes the students’ high scores to
small classes, an accelerated cur-
riculum and strong parental and
faculty support.
"The CAT results verify our
commitment to the pursuit of ex-
cellence in education which has
been the mission of the school
since it was started in 1967," said
Brady.
Gaston Day is an independent
school offering a college preparato-
ry curriculum for students in pre-
kindergarten through grade twelve.
CAT results show Gaston Day
above the average of other non-
public schools in North Carolina.
