Bridges and Pat Carter kick off the Kings Mountain United Fund for 1992 during a luncheon Tuesday, challenging volunteers that the $120,500 goal is attainable Sespite a sluggish economy. Bids accepted for sewer tie-in With the big Gaston County Crowders Creck Wastewater treat- ment plant coming "on line" in January or February, Kings Mountain officials are getting ready, City Manager George Wood said at Tuesday's city council meet- ing. The board accepted the low bid of $75,426.75 from Steppe Construction Company of Mill Springs -for a tie-in construction project from Highway 161 to give the city capability of sanitary sewer flow to Crowders Creek and the bid came under what the city antic- ipated. "We are just delighted," said Wood, in presenting the bid results. Also bidding were: John E. Jenkins, Gastonia, $79,085.00; W. M. Paris & Associates, Charlotte, $144,561.90; R. F. Shinn, Concord, $103,482.75; and Trans State, Stanley, $116.514.30. Only six streets to be paved this year Only six streets are funded by city council for repaving this year. City Manager George Wood's question, "which ones do you want to fix first?" went unanswered by the five-member board Tuesday night. Instead, the board authorized Mayor Kyle Smith to appoint an ad hoc committee to take a look at the streets and prioritize them "accord- ing to need." Ward 2 Commissioner Jackie Barrett said some of the streets in his ward are in bad need of repair. Commissioners Elvin Green and Norma Bridges listed streets in their areas in bad need of repair. Mayer Smith said only $89,445.00 is approved in the budget. "Where do we start?" he asked. Ward 5 commissioner Fred Finger suggested the mayor name a committee and commissioner Al Moretz suggested that city engi- neer Tom Howard be a member of it. The board approved. The six streets on the proposed repaving list are Bridges Drive, from Landing to Gold; Cansler Street, from Gold to Hawthorne; Floyd Street, from York Road to Marie; Dilling Street, from Cemetery to Phenix; Roxford Road from Highway 74 to Downing; and Charles Street from York Road to Pine Manor. Fifteen streets are on the repaving "list" with priority based upon trafficability of the roadway, safety, the number and condition of potholes and utility cut patches and drainage characteristics. Howard listed the following streets in priority order as meeting paving requirements in a memo- randum to council, noting that the priority listing is adjusted periodi- cally as streets continue to deterio- rate under various traffic loadings and weathering. The streets and approximate cost of repairs based on asphalt cost of $28.40 per ton are: Groves Street, Cleveland to Northwoods, $16,046.00; Henry = Street, Obituaries FLOYD BEAM SHELBY - Floyd Monroe Beam, 77, of 607 Kings Road, died August 25, 1991 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital.
