Over steaming cups of coffee, the breakfast crowd is ready at 5:30 a.m. Homemade biscuits and gravy are a specialty but hash browns, country ham, and eggs are also big selling items. : Just good old country cooking is what his customers like and they come back for more. A short-order cook most of his life, Kiser grew up on the old Craftspun Mill Village, son of the late Will and Henrietta Kiser. He got in the restaurant business "by accident" 37 years ago when he helped out his brother at the old Silver Villa and found out he liked the comraderie of the food busi- ness. His wife, Coleen Ellis Kiser, and their son, Danny Kiser, help out in the business and the senior Kiser is toying with the idea that he may retire the first of the year and let his son take over the business. "I wouldn't mind not punching the clock,” he laughed. He also admits that with retirement he could go fishing more with grandson Russell, his most frequent fishing. ‘buddy at Lake Wylie and Lake Murray. Cooking for big crowds has nev- er been a problem for Kiser. He starts with 80 pieces of chicken for the popular roast chicken and dressing lunch to after-church crowds on Sundays. “We pride ourselves in good, hot food," said Kiser, who says he will never serve something he doesn't like to eat. Sunday crowds are served in a minimum of time. Chicken pot pie is also a favorite of weekly lunch goers. Minit cooks . take six to eight big chickens, stew them in a big pot until the meat falls off the bone and then mix the rest of the ingredients, which Kiser says is a secret. Minit employees have nearly 80 years of experience in preparing and serving food. Doris Johnson has been with Kiser 28 years, Marceline Sullens and Ora Lee Matthews have been with the restaurant 20 years, Margie Ross has been with the kitchen crew 18 years and Ruth Rhodes has cooked 12 ycars. Newest employee is Louise Lovelace, who joined Minit Grill two years ago. The grill is a popular place with police officers. On any morning the customers will comprise a cross section of working people and visi- tors who may come to town once a year on vacation and stop in for a meal. Former Senator Ollie Harris, garage owner Jim Leigh and Lawrence Henderson of KM Mica have been regulars at the grill since it opened in 1965. The Kiser family also includes one daughter, Diane Hayden of Charlotte; three grandchildren, one great-grandchildren and another brother, Wesley, retired from Burlington, and sister, Luvinia Sipe of Greenwood, S.C. The fami- ly attends Second Baptist Church. Dick Maxey and Lee McIntyre, both formerly with First Citizens Bank, had a hand in naming the business. Kiser recalls they came into the grill one morning for breakfast and wanted to know if they could be served "in a minute." Minit Grill and its reputation for fast service was born. Kiser's favorite photograph, "a retired cafe man,” hangs over the counter and was given to him by the late Mike Ledford, former owner of KM Farm Center. The picture. is of a man in torn shorts and holey socks in a fisherman's shack. Kiser says he doesn't want to completely quit work. As long as health permits, he wants to ha hand in the business. Needlep fisherman prayers over the co ters by his wife point to his lov fish until "his dying day." The most important thing ab going fishing to Kiser is it's fu He says, "if you catch any that's the bonus." Do You Have Asthma or Emphysema? @ire You Using Inhalers?
