Obituaries Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, November 27, 1991 J. BAXTER PAYSEUR J. Baxter Payseur, 81, of 627 Meadowbrook Rd., died November 20,1991 at home. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Boyce R. and Sara Baxter Payseur. He was married to the late Carolyn Prince Payseur and Mary Wesley Payseur. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Central United Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, James B. Payseur of Charlotte. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church by Rev. Bob Little. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cleveland County Hospice, 201 W. Marion St., Shelby, 28150, or to Central United Methodist Church, S. Piedmont Ave., Kings Mountain, 28086. DUSTY RHYAN MESSER GROVER - Dusty Rhyan Messer, of 152 Blackburn Drive, infant son of Teddy and Lynn Marie Rayfield Messer, died November 20, 1991 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. Surviving, in addition to the par- ents, are the grandparents, Teddy and Kay Messer Sr. of Grover and Charles and Norma Martin of Grover and Horace Rayfield of Blacksburg, S . C. and the great- grandparents, Robert and Phyllis Palmer of Springfield, Ohio and Roxie Bledsoe of Grover. The graveside service was con- ducted Saturday at 2 p.m. by Helen Alexander at Grover Cemetery. SUSIE COOKE GROVER - Susie Elizabeth Cooke, 93, of 211 Carolina Ave., died November 24, 1991 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of York County, S .C., she was daughter of the late Calvin P. and Ellen Bolin Wallace and a retired textile employee. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, J. Pinkney Cooke of Grover; two daughters, Dorothy Childers of Greensboro and Ruby Little of Grover; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grover First Baptist Church. Rev. John Bridges wr aNd Rev. Paul Sorrell officiated. A Burial was in Grover Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grover First Baptist Church, Cleveland Ave., Grover, 28073. ZEBULON B. VANCE CROSSNORE - Zebulon Baird Vance, 88, died November 22, 1991 in a Crossnore Hospital. An Avery County native, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Mary Martha Cuthbertson Vance. He attended Davidson College and earned his bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University and a master of arts from Columbia University. He taught and coached at Candler High School, and for 10 years was principal and taught and coached in the Marion and Wilson school systems. From 1943-71, he was director of physical education and athletics at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Vance was one of the original 15 inductees into the Mercer University Athletic Hall of Fame. After retiring from Mercer, he founded the Mill Timber Creek Nursery of Pineola. His son, Dr. Zeb B. Vance, associate professor at Harvard Medical School, died in 1985. Survivors include his wife, Mary T= will “3 Elizabeth Elam Vance; two daugh- ters, Dr. Elizabeth Raft of Durham and Mary Watson of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; and a great- grandson. The funeral was conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Pineola Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Kenneth Baker officiated and interment was in Cuthbertson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pineola Baptist Church. RAYMOND ELGIN GASTONIA - Raymond Theril Elgin, 63, of 2094 Lowell- Bethesda Road, died November 25, 1991 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A native of Canon, GA, he was the son of the late Raymond A. and Dell Holloway Elgin and was re- tired from Talon in Gastonia. He was a member of Holland Memorial Lodge #668 in Gastonia. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ensley Elgin; two daugh- ters, Teresa Merricks and Leesa Elgin of Gastonia; a brother, Walter H. Elgin of Kings Mountain; and a grandson, Ronnie Waters. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Fleming Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Carothers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 400 West 1st St., Lowell, NC 28098.
