Olive Penfold, who prefers her family and friends call her Ollie, carried with her on the U. S. Air eight-hour flight a family tradition which will be served at 4 p.m. tea time on Christmas Day. Itis a gift- shaped dark fruit cake made with brandy, royal i icing and Marzipan trimmed in red and topped with "Happy Christmas." Early Christmas memories of cutting up fruits and nuts for a Christmas cake were shared by the mother- -daughter around the Christmas tree in the Peppard's Georgetown Apartment. Other English traditions will be enjoyed by the Peppard family, which includes their two sons, Johnathan, 23, and Christian, 19. Grandma Ollie will cook a smoked ham and turkey, roast potatoes, cranberry and red currant jelly, and plenty of vegetables. She plans to soak her ham overnight in cold wa- ter and cook it gently, glazing with honey and cloves. The whole family worshiped to- gether Sunday at Kings Mountain Baptisi Church. The Peppards will complete their gift- -buying on + Christmas Eve to give Grandma a taste of shopping American- “style. Mrs. Penfold loves Kings Mountain and especially the gro- cery stores. She said she inherited her love of fine cuisine from her grandmother, who had 17 children, and from an aunt tho used to bake for Princess Mary. 20 IE '52+°(JOY TO THE WORLD oO ® A ..and to our many friends! Last Christmas she was in Valencia, Spain and took English foods to celebrate an old fashioned Christmas. Boxing Day, gifts presented the day after Christmas, and New Year's Eve in London's Trafalgar Square are holiday traditions she and her 18-year-old granddaughter celebrate in England. The Gulf War brought closer tics between England and America, said Mrs. Penfold, who boxed up packages almost daily for service- men for whom she prayed diligent- ly. Even Santa will have a tough time competing with Ollie this Christmas. After a 27 year absence, the family has a lot of catching up to do.
