Walker, 69, of 319 Scotland Dr., spent the last hours of his life talking with his family about the Kings Mountain Senior Center. The Program Coordinator for the Senior Center died suddenly Tuesday in the Kings Mountain Hospital. He had worked Monday, scheduling appointments for Tuesday, but began complaining of chest pains Monday night and was rushed to the Intensive Care Section of the hospital. "He had an appointment with a senior citizen Tuesday at 9 a.m. and told his wife he also had the program for that afternoon's AARP meeting," said Helen Logan, a longtime friend and co-worker at the Center, who recalled many se- nior citizens Walker had helped with Medi-Aid and Medicare in- surance as well as give timely ad- vice on other insurance plans. Logan said Walker's expertise in the insurance program and his friendly concern for the Center par- ticipants will be greatly missed. Linda Merritt, director of Transportation Administration of Cleveland County, called Walker a dedicated volunteer and a dedicat- ed member of the senior staff. "His shoes will be hard to fill," she said. City of KM Aging Director Monty Thornburg said Walker had a gift for getting things done and found ways to help people. He said Walker came to him two weeks be- fore his retirement and volunteered for 20 hours a week at the Senior Center. "He was here every morn- ing at 9 a.m. and worked until 1 p.m. and considered it a job even before he was hirgdy 1 Walker volunteered at the Center from 1984-88 and then was hired in fall of 1988. He won the Volunteer of the Year Award, along with his wife, an active volunteer, Co-workers said he kept up with all the changes in laws pertaining to insurance and Medicare bendfits “and passed on much needed infor- mation to the senior citizens, help- ing organize the KM AARP chap- ter and serving as president. He counseled clients with insurance program for SHIIP, seniors health insurance information program. . Retired from the New York City Transit Authority, he was also re- tired from the U. S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, serving as church sexton and Eucharistic min- ister and was a former member of the Cleveland County Domicillary Home advisory board. He was a member of Frank B. Glass Post 9811 VFW and American Legion Post 155. A native of New York, he was married to Margaret Noles Walker. They moved to Kings Mountain in 1981 and he joined his cousin's firm, Ruppe Hosiery, and also worked as a supervisor at Sulzer Brothers, now Dupont. He was son of the late Charles Robert and Agnes Katherine Kennedy Walker Sr. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Charles R. Walker III of Raleigh; three daugh- ters, Janice Truelove of Silver Springs, Md., Ann Hurley of Shelby and Karen Sugarman of Staten Island, N. Y.; one sister, Alyce Waldmann of Stuart, Fla., and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church by Monsignor William Willein. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. FRANCES SHIPPER Mrs. Frances Ray Shipper, 52, of 1012 Sherwood Lane, died Sunday in Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Lee County, she was married to David Shipper, who sur- vives, and was daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Thomas Berryman. She was a homemaker. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three daughters, Mrs. Michelle Lepon of Fort Knox, Ky., Susan Carter of Sanford and Amy Carter of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Rufus Berryman, Cortius Berryman and Danny Ray Berryman, all of Sanford; two sis- ters, her twin Frankie Liendo of Fayetteville and Betty Lou Berryman of Sanford; two grand- children and her aunt, Mamie Hunter of Durham. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Sanford. Monseigneur William Wellein officiated. Burial was in Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery. REV. R. F. KILGORE GROVER - Rev. Robert Fulton Kilgore, 91, of 516 Kilgore Rd., died January 6, 1992 at home. A native of Deculah, Ga., he was married to the late Venia Mae Horton Kilgore and was son of the late John and Lizzie Burson Kilgore. Pastor of First Baptist Church of Earl for 45 years, where he also tu- tored children, he had served as pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain 20 years. He was secretary-treasurer of Ebenezer Baptist Association, treasurer of NAACP, secretary and treasurer of Baptist Friendly Aid Society of North and South Carolina, and member of Masonic Lodge 8. Surviving are two sons, John Robert Kilgore of Lowell and James Fulton Kilgore of Kings Mountain; five daughters, Effie Kilgore of the home, Lillie Ruth Evans, Rebecca Curry, Mary Jane Curry, all of Kings Mountain, and Emma Kay Gillespie of Lowell; two sisters, Mamie Ruth Littlejohn of Bessemer City and Julia Poole of Glen Alpine; 21 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Earl. Rev. Lester Jackson and Rev. Simon McClain will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Earl. DARYL SMALLWOOD Daryl Preston Smallwood, 22, of 112 Peoria Lane, died January 1, 1992 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Gainesville, Ga., he was married to Lisa Parker Smallwood, who survives, and was son of Judy Carlan of Gainesville, Ga. and the: lage, Carl: Smallwood. He served with the U.S. Army Airborne in Saudi Arabia and was discharged from the service October 28, 1991, Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are seven brothers, Stephen Smallwod, Donald Smallwood, Gerald Smallwood, Wayne Smallwood, Virgial Smallwood, Mitchell Smallwood, David Smallwood, all of Gainesville, Ga.; and onc sister, Angie Willard of Lynchburg, Va. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Larry Burns officiat- ed. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville, Ga. RONNIE STROUPE PATTERSON SPRINGS - Ronnie Yates Stroupe, 41, died January 2, 1992 in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was married to Nancy Randolph Stroupe and was son of Lois . Blanton Stroupe Ivester of Kings Mountain, who survives, and the late Hughlon Yates Stroupe. He was employed by Defender Industry at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are his stepfather, Hugh Ivester of Kings Mountain; three daughters, Sherry Stroupe of Turlock, CA., Jennifer Quickle of Matthews and Lory Rogers of Battleboro; two brothers, Vernon Stroupe and Richard Stroupe, both of Kings Mountain; one sister, Renee Perry of Kings Mountain and one granddaughter, Angel Hadeed of Nags Head. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Billy Bowen and Rev. Bobby Meek officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. FRANCIS J. SINCOX HOMESTEAD, FLA. - Francis John Sincox, 93, of 17900 Bauer Dr., 264th St., died January 6, 1991 at Homestead General Hospital. A native of Cornwall, England, he was married to Edna H. Sincox, who survives, and was father of Dr. Frank Sincox of Kings Mountain and Gastonia. He was retired from General Motors Company. He was a World War I veteran of the U.S. Navy. ; Also surviving are his sister, Inez Sincox, and two grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at Palms Memorial Church. Burial was in Homestead, Fla. CHARLES GOFORTH JR. ARCIE LOVELACE Arcie Bell Lovelace, 85, of 826 Stoney Point Rd., died January 2, 1991 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the widow of Oscar Lovelace and daughter of the late Tillman B. and Amanda Ledford Bell. She was a homemaker and member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Billy B. Lovelace of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Lillian Harmon and Carolyn Lail, both of Kings Mountain; one sister, Madge Parker of Shelby; three grandchil- dren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Ron Caulder officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. HAROLD DEAN HAMRICK GROVER - Harold Dean - Hamrick, 37, of 1038 Lavender Rd., died December 30, 1991 in Kings Mountain. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Sarah Pack Carpenter of Grover and Robert Lce Hamrick of Shelby. He was a construction worker. Surviving, in addition to his par- ents, arc his stepfather, John Carpenter of Grover; one son, Travis Dean Hamrick of Shelby; one daughter, Kelly Shawn Hamrick of Alexandria,Va.; and three brothers, Buren Hamrick of Grover and Ricky Hamrick and Robert Hamrick Jr., both of Shelby. Memorial services were con- ducted Friday at 6 p.m.-at Penley's Chapel Church. Rev. W. C. Huffstetler and Rev. Carl Ray Cook officiated. REX A. HALE SR. Rex A. Hale Sr., 59, of 9A Battlcforest Apts., died December 31, 1991 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Murray, Ky. he was married to Maxine Rollins Hale, - who survives, and was son of the late Albert and Desiree Tatum Hale. He was employed by Ace Hardware. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Rex A. Hale Jr. of Lincoln, Nebraska; and two daughters, Yvonne McGrew of Lincoln, NE, and Jo Ann Truhlicka of Orlando, Fla. The funeral was conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at East Kings Mountain Church of God. Rev. John Heath officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
