the board of deacons for a number
of years. A member and past
Master of Fairview Lodge 339, he
was a certified Patron and Lecturer,
a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason
and honorary life member of Dunn
and Lillington Lodges. He was a
member of Kings Mountain
Chapter 123 Order of the Eastern
Star and past patron and Grand
Officer, 1972-73, of the Grand
Chapter of North Carolina.
Surviving, in addition to his
wife, are two sons, Terry Leonard
of Kings Mountain and Beattie
Leonard of High Point; one daugh-
ter, Camille Bagwell of Kings
Mountain; one brother, Mack
Leonard of Morganton; one sister,
Harriett Payne of Houston, Texas;
and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted
Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist
Church. Dr. John W. Sloan and Dr.
Joel Jenkins will officiate.
Interment, with Masonic rites, will
be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

SHELBY - Sarah Callahan
Gold, 65, of 2101 Chatfield Rd.,
died March 4, 1992 at Cleveland
Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County,
she was wife of Hugh William
Gold and daughter of the late
Dewey W. and Alma Crawley
Callahan. She was a retired music
teacher in the Cleveland County
Schools and owned Sarah's Sweets
and Such at Shelby Farmers’
Market.
She was a member of Zion
Baptist Church, Faith Sunday
‘School Class and Golden Years
Club.
Surviving, in addition to her
husband, are two daughters, Mrs.
Lynn G. Ledford of Shelby and
Mrs. Ann GG. Harrill of
Huntersville; one brother, Robert J.
Callahan of Shelby; and five
grandchildren, Leslie Harrill of
Huntersville, Fred Harrill Jr., Leigh
Harrill, Christy Ledford, and
Shelley Ledford, all of Shelby.
The funeral was conducted
Friday at 2 p.m. at Zion Baptist
Church by Rev. Russell Fitts and
Dr. Robert Abrams. Burial was in
Zion Church Cemetery.

Vandals shooting out street lights
A factory defective disconnect
switch in the new Gaston Street
12KV Substation put 1500 people
in the dark Saturday from 7:40
a.m.-11:15 a.m., according to
Utility Superintendent Jimmy
Maney.
Power was off at some business-
es and homes in a scattered area of
the city.
"This was brand new equipment
but it took awhile to find the prob-
lem. Duke Power's high power
line knocked out too," said Maney.
