Women honored for service Joyce Falls Cashion and Martha Lee Scruggs, like the 10 other Cleveland County women honored for distinguished service Saturday, were cited for making positive con- tributions in their communities for many years. Mrs. Cashion, Kings Mountain grocer, has been active in the Cleveland County Democratic Party for many years and was the first female party chairman. She has served on the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners since her election in 1984 as its first female member. Mrs. Scruggs’ role in the Grover community endeared her to the many residents of the area as orga- nizer of the Grover Woman's Club and an active Grover School volun- teer. Scruggs established the Winter Night Shelter in Cleveland County. Cleveland County Commission on Women hosted the banquet and presented awards to honorees at Cleveland Country Club. Senator Helen Marvin was guest speaker. Other women honored for ser- vice were Dorothy Edwards, re- tired Gardner-Webb College educa- tor; Patty Neal Dorian, executive director of the Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council since 1985; Aileen W. Ford, the first woman to be elected to the Shelby City Council; former teacher Rosalynd Nix Gilliatt and partner for many years at Gilliatt's Florist; Ellen P. Powell, retired superinten- dent of Cleveland County Schools; Author and former editor Grace Rutledge Hamrick, first woman to serve as president of the UNC alumni Association; Doris B. Siding and Windows Borders, county register of deeds; Rep. Edith Lutz, is the first wom- an to represent Cleveland County in state government; Dorothy M. Roark, former administrative offi- cer in the U. S. Air Force, former editor for educational television, and former director of develop- ment and public information for Cleveland Community College, and State Senator Helen Rhyne Marvin, former shop owner, teach- er and academic department head at Gaston College who is complet- ing her eight term as a state Senator representing the 25th District. "Whatever their backgrounds, in some strong way these women have all supported and encouraged other women and have made life better not only for women but for all of us here in the county,"said Shirley Lail, co-chairman of the Commission and associate director of admissions at Gardner-Webb College. Lail said that recognizing the 12 honorees as a group will hopefully offer encouragement to other wom- en quietly enhancing the quality of life through their efforts and pro- vide leadership role models for young women to follow. Making the presentations were Debra Blanton, Doris Cooper, Connie Goforth Greene, Jeanne Kincaid, Shirley Lail, Robert Miller, Jeanne Patterson, Esther Plummer, Beverly Shuford, Kay Kiser Wallace and Betsy Wells. Each honoree stood with the pre- senter at the podium and accepted a framed plaque which included a photograph. Each honoree also was given a white corsage. Families of. . honorees were also recognized. State Rep. Jack Hunt and Mrs. Hunt were special guests of Mrs. Lutz. Wells, Kings Mountain teacher, said, the Cleveland County Commission on Women was estab- lished by the county commission- ers in 1978 to identify and respond to the needs of all citizens in Cleveland County with the greatest emphasis being on the needs of area women.
