Students learn about reptiles Eighth-grade science teacher Laura Dixon met herpetologist Ron Cromer five years ago, and a tradi- tion began in her classroom. Each year she invites Cromer to speak with her students about the lives, habits and characteristics of rep- tiles, especially snakes. Cromer in- troduces students to two dozen live U.S. native harmless species of reptiles including turtles, lizards and snakes. He also brings along Penelope, a giant python from Southeast Asia. Dixon feels strongly about her students learning the reptiles’ role in the animal kingdom, while em- phasizing ecology and conserva- tion values. The program stresses safety and dealing with snakes you encounter in the wild, as well as myths verses facts. Dixon feels the program is bene- ficial if she can help just one stu- dent overcome their fear of snakes and educate them on the snakes role in our environment. She's even convinced a few fellow teachers to pet a snake. The three science teachers at Kings Mountain Middle School were brave enough to handle. the snakes Ron Cromer brought for his "Snakes Alive!" program.
