school
planned
Kings Mountain District Schools
will have a state-funded summer
school for students in grades 3, 6
and 8 who failed state standards.
These are students who scored be-
low the 25th percentile on the
California Achievement Test and
who failed the Minimum Skills
-- Diagnostic. Test.
The state-funded summer school
will be held at East Elementary
School and will begin at 8 a.m. and
end at 1 p.m. Transportation and
lunch will be provided.
Starting date for state-funded
summer school is June 17 and will
last through July 16. July 2 and 3
will be holidays. Testing will be
held on July 15.
Students have a maximum limit
of four absences in order to get
credit for class.
Kings Mountain Middle School
will offer a tuition summer school
for students in grades 6, 7 and 8
who failed math, English or
Academic Skills. The cost is $150.
No transportation or lunch will be
provided. Classes begin at 8 a.m.
and end at 1 p.m.
Subjects that will be offered are
language arts and math. Classes
begin Jun 17 and end on July 16
and July 2 and 3 are holidays. No
credit will be given if the student
misses more than four days.
Kings Mountain High School
will also offer a tuition summer
school for students in grades 9, 10,
11 and 12. The cost will be $150
per one unit.
Registration is June 17 and
classes start on that day and run
through July 16. No classes on July
2 and 3. Courses will be offered on
the basis of student demand.
Maximum allowable absences is
four days. No transportation or
lunches will be provided. Classes
begin at 8 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.
each day.
Cops run torch

Mountain Police Department car-
ried North Carolina's Special
Olympics torch briefly Wednesday
morning, speeding it on its way to
Wilmington for the grand finale
May 29.

the Western city limits to the ~&
Gaston County line where Gaston
County officers picked it up and re-
layed it to the Mecklenburg County

The Law Enforcement Torch
Run is the annual fundraiser orga-
nized by the N C. Association of
Chiefs of Police and benefits the
state's Special Olympics.
Local coordinator for the run
was Captain Bob Hayes.

week with a reception and awards. Above are: Joey Turner, Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year, who
has been employed by the hospital for four years and works in the Operating Room; Sandy Brothers,
Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year, who has been employed for three and one half years and works in
the Surgical Unit; and Carolyn Kuykendall, registered nurse of the year, who has worked at the hospital
for 23 and one half years and is the night supervisor.
