GEORGE BLALOCK General Motors officials Ray Taylor, left, and Carl Gano, right, present the coveted "Mark of Excellence" award to Jim Rinnert, center, plant manager of Kings Mountain's Eaton Corporation, repre- senting Eaton's 500 employees. Taylor said this was the first Eaton plant to receive the elite honor. Seated at right is Henry Holland, General Manager of Eaton's Transmission Division. Eaton receives GM award Eaton Corporation's Kings Mountain plant received the award Friday that few General Motors suppliers earn. GM executives presented the coveted "Mark of Excellence" award to the heavy duty truck transmission plant. The 500 em- ployees celebrated with steak and all the trimmings. Since its inception in 1987,0nly about seven percent of GM suppli- ers have received the elite award. And General Motors executives say that GM doesn't hand out the award lightly. "It's a total plant effort," said Sandy Cutler, Executive VP of Eaton, on hand with other plant of- ficials for a 10 a.m. ceremony and a company-wide luncheon on the grounds. "You are all winners of this award," said local Eaton plant manager Jim Rennirt, accepting the handsome plaque and mounting a Eaton flag in the background. "This is what we are about, making _ the world's best transmissions ev- A. Included in the eryday." Rennirt says that GM's criteria for the award gets tougher every year and followed an assessment or audit in March in which Eaton qualified for the excellence award but went a step higher by the end of the year and eamed the coveted mark of excellence. The audit looked at five areas, including quality, delivery, costs, technology, and leadership. GM executive Ray Taylor said that a committee of 15 people rep- resenting every division of General Motors scored Eaton high in 55 ar- eas of leadership to finally select the world class vehicle division winners. "Today people want the best buy for their money and quali- ty and teamwork like yours is im- portant in every market," he said. "You told us you're the best in the world in your business." The Kings Mountain Eaton staff taking part in the ceremonies, in addition to Rennirt, were Ted Taylor, manufacturing engineer manager; Jay Bridges, quality. as- ‘Bradshaw graduates police course Air Force Reserve Al/C John training were base ground 4 fense “and concepts and principles o¥anti- terrorism, Bradshaw, a 1991 graduate of Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia, is the son of John F. and Helen K.
