COM- IN THE LAND OF THE SHOGUN (Lathrop, Lee & Shepart Books, MODORE PERRY Curley Howard joins entertainers at WKMT What goes around comes around. I know it's a worn-out cliche. I don't think it's out of place with this article. Back in the fifties, both Jonas Bridges and Hugh Dover were an- nouncers for Don Gibson's live ra- dio show. A young man called "Curley Howard" was playing lead guitar for Gibson. . Jonas hadn't seen Howard in over 40 years. Now Curley is com- ing to work for Jonas, Back in the days when Curley and I were on the road, we both traveled with cowboy star Lash Larue. We weren't there at the same time. I did meet Curley while we were on the road. It's not like Howard is coming to work at a sta- tion with people he doesn't know. It could be that WKMT is the Valhalla for old entertainers. Curley Howard is one of the most popular morning radio per- sonalities in the south. He has a _ down home personality. His warm delivery and natural laughter is his biggest asset. It makes the audi- ence feel like he's a life-long friend. Curley gives a personalized endorsement to his sponsors. Many clients are more than satisfied with sales generated from advertising on Curley's radio show. He has the tal- ent to motivate a buying audience to a particular brand or store. Howard Sisk was born in Shelby. At 14 he left home with a guitar to find his fortune. He trav- eled with Grand Ole Opry stars. Among them were Don Gibson, Clyde Moody, Don Reno and Red Smiley, Kitty Wells, and Red Sovine. Since then he's been in mu- sic. Howard's next endeavor was ra- dio. He went to work as a DJ in Winston-Salem. He stayed there for 18 years. A drunk driver almost ended Curley's career. It was about a year ago. Early in the morning, Curley was driving on Highway 16 be- tween Newton and Hickory. A drunk driver hit him head on. Howard suffered a broken back, bruised heart, broken arm, broken shoulder and lacerations.. He spent six months in the hospital. Howard is up and around. He says he feels good, but still has some back pain. ~ Curley has a son in college. He's at East Carolina University in Greenville, His wile travels exten- sively. She lives in Kernersville. Curley has been living at Lake Norman. He likes to fish and listen to music. The 24-foot pontoon boat he owns gives him a chance to do both. I know the audience and staff at WKMT will be glad to have Curley on the wind, By the time this article is printed, Curley will have signed on. He will work from 5am. until 9 a.m, Jerry Bedsole, who ran the morning shift for years, will take over at 9, Gene Austin, who signs off at midnight, says he's heard Curley is So entertaining that he is just going (0 stay up to tune him in at 5 a.m. Stacy Spicer five years old Stacey Leigh Spicer celebrated her fifth birthday on May 23 with a bowling party at Liberty Lanes.
