"To Be Given A Second Chance" was the title of her win- ning piece. In the article she noted that at Cornell University, her parents were part of an experimental pro- ject to increase the numbers of peregrines, for almost 60 years ab- sent, ravaged by DDT and other organochlorides. Comparing them to falcons, she said they could not fly but as young peregrines were transported to selected sites in the mountains of South Carolina until they were old enough to fly. Writing as a peregrine given a sec- ond chance at life, she said "As the scientists were extremely con- cerned with our welfare, we were fed until we could hunt on our own, and then freed of all human ~ tes, were truly independent. Now, as 1 glide above my new found home, gazing at sights not seen by my kind for decades, I remember the scientists and their dreams. And I wonder if it , like the falcon, will lift its wings of hope to the winds and take flight."
