Er ~age 12A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, June 11, 1992 Spectrum Dyed Yarns Inc. is ranked as one of the fastest grow- ing companies in North Carolina, according to an annual survey of the state's top 100 privately owned companies, and Parkdale Mills, which operates a local plant here, isranked No. 3. In a recession year that saw 24 companies move up 10 spots or more on the survey by the interna- tional accounting firm Arthur Andersen, Spectrum moved up 32 spots, from 76th to 44th. Parkdale moved up six spots, from No. 9 to No. 3, ranking in the elite Top 10. Doran Textiles, of Shelby, the only other Cleveland County com- pany on the survey, moved up six spots, moving from 22nd in 1991 to 16th this year. Spectrum is a package dyer of textile yarns for the knitting and weaving industries. C. Douglas RPA RG A i a Ra vy a RE Blanchard is executive officer. Parkdale manufacturers cotton and cotton/synthetic yarns for the apparel and industrial trades. W. Duke Kimbrell of Gastonia is exec- utive officer. The local companies moved up the ladder because of increased sales growth, according to Mike Henderson, Andersen's tax partner in preparing the list. Revenue for Spectrum was esti- mated in the survey at between $50 million and $99 million. Revenue for Parkdale was estimated at $500 million and above. Revenue for Doran was estimated at between $100 million and $249 million. Doran makes spun and dyed yams .and spun and cotton fabrics for the apparel, industrial and home fur- nishings industry. Several of the state's top compa- nies, including Burlington Industries, No. 1 in the Top 10 last SCHOOL SYSTEM RETIREES -- Maintenance worker Andrew McClain, teacher Margaret Baird, prin- cipal Jim Scruggs, and teachers Carolyn Westmoreland, Elizabeth Allen and Ann Byers. Spectrum, Parkdale ranked in top 100 year, were acquired last year and became public companies and no longer qualify for the survey, said Henderson. The North Carolina 100 was compiled this year for the 9th time by the international professional services firm of Arthur Andersen. The 1992 North Carolina 100 is featured in a cover story of the June issue of "Business North Carolina" magazine. The continued recession took its toll in 1991. Henderson comment- ed, "This is evidenced by the fact that, for the first time in the eight- year history of the survey, the threshold for getting in actually de- creased.” Henderson said compa- nies choosing to participate in the survey are assured that the finan- cial information provided to Arthur Andersen will be held in strict con- fidence and that revenues will be categorized by range and employ- ment listed statistically. A SL Ap Er AR SH VG tl ere d Escaping death Mike's best magic trick Last week T did an article about three successful entertainers. One of them was Mike Muscat. Some people in the area may not know that Mike left his home in Gastonia. It was shortly after he | did a movie in this area with Jonas | Bridges, Reb Wiesener and myself, and some other local people. As I told you, a lot of people laughed and made fun of Mike. Some of them told him he'd be back in a couple of weeks. They failed to see how much talent Mike had and how determined he was to succeed. Mike went on to do all the major soaps. He did a lot of full- feature movies. He did some acting and coaching in "Terminator Two." Mike was working on a new movie last week. I forgot to add that he also did stunts. Last Thursday at 1 a.m., Mike was in the process of filming a stunt. There was a problem with the chute. It didn't open properly. The wind blew the chute directly into a brick wall. Mike was hurled through a window. It took two hours to find him after the acci- dent. : Reb Wiesener was the last one to contact the hospital in California. He says "Mike was cut badly over It's a boy Mr. and Mrs. Bobby D. She has also served as secretary on the board of directors of Tryonata Volunteer Fire Department and secretary-treasurer "Mike is hard-hcaded. When he | makes up his mind he hangs with it. I think he'll be back acting soon." Mike worked the plush clubs as a magician when he wasn't acting or coaching. He's stunned a lot of . people with his magic. The biggest . trick he ever performed was some- how getting through that window. Had he not done so he would have slammed into the brick wall. I sure hope Mike gets better soon. I wish him the best in his movie career. He's worked hard and deserves everything he gets. That is, minus the accident. MARY LOU MAUNEY of Bessemer City Homemakers Extension Club.
