Jackson, Wilson Stoney Jackson and Robbie Wilson shot a 67-64--131 Saturday and Sunday to win the annual Member-Guest Golf Tournament at Kings Mountain Country Club. They finished six strokes ahead of Mitch Howze and Rusty Bumgardner, who shot a 68- 69-- 137. Gerald Putnam and Jim Gilliam finished third with a 67-72--139, winning a playoff over John and Mike Howze, who shot 69-70-- 139. Eric spicer and John Whitley won the championship B flight with a 73-67--140. Bill and Rodney Sellers finished second with a 73-69--142, winning a play- off over Brad Wilson and John VanDyke, who shot a 71-71--142. John Gamble and Craig Huggins finished fourth at 72-73--145, fol- lowed by Mickey Powers and Ray Adams at 71-75--146. Rick Moore and Dan Gesmundo won ‘the first flight with a 77-69-- 146. Ronnie Wilson and Blaine Froneberger were second with a 75-73-148 and John Goforth and Jake Montgomery were third with a 75-730--148. John Cloninger and Ken in kart racing For three weeks in a row, Caleb Carroll has won first place at Dixieland Raceway in Gastonia, where he races go-karts in the rookie division. His father, David Carroll of Kings Mountain, also recently brought home a trophy in the box stock division. After not racing for more than 10 years, David decided only for fun to drive once more. After start- ing in the rear, he streaked to sec- ond place after only a couple of laps. - David said he doesn't intend to start racing again. "My main con- cern is having my son's kart ready to race on Friday night at Southern _ Pride in Blacksburg, where Caleb is leading-in points." Mechanically speaking, Carroll said building karts have always in- terested him more than driving. Normally he spends about 12 hours a week getting Caleb's kart ready. The Carroll racing team started out as a hobby but has quickly turned into serious business. They now have three karts and three drivers. In putting contests, Terry Pilgram and Joe Bates were first in the men's division and John McGinnis and Ken Nantz were second. In the women's division, Connie Ledford and Peggy Jackson were first and Shirley Austin and Margretta Adams were second. Closest to the pin winners on par three holes were Ray Adams, Chip Foy, Paul Hendricks Jr., Artie Kilgore, Jim Lybrand, Pat Murphy and Parks Neisler. Five Mounties make all-conference team Kings Mountain High School placed five players on the All- Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball team, and Coach Bruce Clark was selected SWC Coach of the Year. Representing the first place Mountaineers on the all-star unit were pitcher Stephen Fisher, desig- nated hitter David R. Jenkins, sec- ond baseman Mike Smith, third baseman Todd Ware, and outfielder Caja Ormand. Pitcher Dennis Logan of East Rutherford was named Player of the Year. Others selected were pitchers Dixon Putnam of Burns and Steve Gold of Shelby; catchers Jeremy Jones of East Rutherford and Kevin Moss of Shelby; infielders Michael Wellmon of Burns, Preston Allen of East Rutherford, Brad Taylor and Chris Dixon of Shelby, Blue Pittman of R-S Central, Brent Payton of North Gaston and David Fender of South Point; and outfielders Gary Shuford and David Secrest of "Shelby, Jimmy Douglas of East Rutherford, David Huss of R-S Central and Brian Neagle of South . BW Softball - Kings Mountain in- fielder Holly Goforth was named Co-Player of the Year in the SWC in girls softball and was joined on the all-conference team by team- mates Tandra Leftwich and Jennifer Carroll, both outfielders. The other Co-Player of the Year was outfielder Traci Caskey of North Gaston. South Point's Chip Herring was named Coach of the Year.
