1® an i W or a A Jue i { { KM soccer team opens season Kings Mountain's Mountaineers will open what they hope to be an- other successful soccer season Monday night at home in the first round of the Gardner-Webb Tournament. Kings Mountain, defending Southwestern 3-A Conference champion, will host North Gaston at 7:30 p.m. South Point will face Freedom in the opening match at 5:30. : Winners of the two KM matches will advance to the second round next Wednesday at either Crest High or Gardner-Webb. The cham- pionship round will be played Saturday, August 29 at Gardner- Webb. Coach Dan Potter's Mountaineers are coming off their most successful season cver in 1991. Almost all of the school records were broken en route to an undefeated (9-0-1) conference record. Kings Mountain lost only two starting seniors off last year's out- standing team, Kevin Blalock and Matt Stout. The '92 season promis- es to be another banner year. Coach Potter has a host of re- turning seniors, including Michael Bridges, Thong Chanthaphang, Clayward Corry, Binh Davis, Stephen Fisher, Lewis Nantz, Samuel Nucman, Caja Ormand, Brad Putnam, Damon Putnam, David Ramsey, Sarimaha Rithiphong, Ty Ross and Kyle Scllers. This group of seniors is the first class of players to play four years in the KMHS soccer program and have already put the Mountaineers on the state 3-A soc- cer map by making the state play- offs two of the first three years. Potter has scheduled several non-conference games against top- notch opponents to prepare the Mountaineers for a run at their sec- ond straight SWC title. The Mountaineers will battle Statesville, Hunter Huss, Ashbrook and West Mecklenburg before opening SWC action on September 16 against R-S Central. Members of this year's tcam arc Binh Davis, Bryan Leftwich, Stephen Fisher, Caja Ormand, David Ramsey, Brian LeFevers, Sarimaha Rithiphong, Ty Ross, Ott Phonephet, Thong Chanthaphang, Gum Souksavath, Alan Logan, Roger Moss, Jim Depew, Will Eskridge, Sage Fulton, Bergen Hall, Michael Bridges, Jerry Wilson, Greg George, Stewart Marlowe, Lewis Nantz, Clay Corry, Daniel Marlowe, Casey Sipe, Samuel Nueman, Israel Angeles, Robert Wingo, Jennifer Leports, Phanuel Nueman, Brad KM Parks and Recreation activities The Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department has an- nounced the following programs. BM Aerobics - Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:40-9:40 a.m.; Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5:30-6:30; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30-7:30. The fee is $10 for inside city resi- dents and $15 for outside city resi- dents. Register between the ist and Sth of each month. BM Water aerobics - Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10-11 am., and Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30- 7:30 p.m., Neisler Natatorium. The fee is $10 for senior citizens, $15 for inside city residents and $22.50 for outside city residents. ; HB Holiday decorating - Begins Tuesday, Sept. 8 and continues each Tuesday through September from 6-8 p.m. Various items such as wreaths, swags, table arrange- ments and more will be made. Tim Hord of Kings Mountain Florist will be the instructor. Registration is $15 and supplies are extra. Pre- registration is required. B Western line dance - Classes are held every Tuesday through August and every Thursday in September from 7-9 p.m. The cost is $6 per week. Instructors are Gene and Pat Brooks. B Mountaineer Days - Applications for crafters and food vendors for the annual Mountaineer Days celebration are now being accepted at the Community Center. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 26. BM Tennis lessons - Youth and adult tennis lessons are taught in two-week sessions at the tennis courts at Deal Street Park. Instructor is Bill Naylor. Fees vary from $18 to $23. All registration is handled at the P&R Department. B® Open gym - The Community Center gym is open each Friday from 5-9 p.m. HB Co-Rec volleyball - An orga- nizational meeting for co-rec vol- leyball is planned for Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m. Rules will be distributed. The league will be _open to church, industrial or "pick- up” teams. Any teams interested in playing in the league should call the Recreation Department at 734- 0449. BM Fall softball - A meeting of teams in the open fall softball league will be held August 26 at 6:30 p.m. Entry fees are due at that time. HB Teen aerobics - An aerobics class for ages 12 t¢ 15 will begin in Benefit golf tournament set at KMCC Region VIII of the North Carolina Recreation Park Society will sponsor a benefit golf tourna- ment Friday, August 28 at Kings Mountain Country Club. The tournament will be a four player, captain's choice format us- ing a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. Proceeds will be used for the Recreation and Park Society build- ing fund campaign. Fee is $160 per team with $80 being tax deductible under IRS codes. Included in the fee is food and beverage throughout the event, cart fee, and various: prizes and awards. Prizes will be awarded for places first through fifth ranging from $300 gift certificates and _ plaques per team to $100 gift cer- tificate and plaques per team. The dollar amounts are based on 40 teams and will be prorated for less Hall of Fame banquet slated The Sixth Annual Belmont Sports Hall of Fame Banquet at Cramer Mountain Country Club on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m., is expected to be a quick sellout this year when three men with strong ties to Belmont Abbey College will be honored. Two of the men, former Belmont Abbey and Marquette Warrior bas- ketball coach Al McGuire, and Howard A. "Humpy" Wheeler Jr., president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, will at- tend and will be inducted. The third man to be honored is the late Howard A. "Humpy" Wheeler Sr., the legendary Belmont Abbey coach and athletic director for almost four decades. He will be inducted posthumously. In addition to the oldest son, Humpy Jr., the Wheeler family that night will be represented by Coach Wheeler's wife, Kathleen, and three other children, Angie Plexico, Mary Wheeler and David . Wheeler. There are eight grandchil- dren. : Art Shoemaker, founder of the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame and chairman of the selection commit- tee, said, "We're so very fortunate to get Coach McGuire back with us. He told me he was happy to be a part of the program and particu- larly looks forward to the phase of the banquet when the Wheeler family will be honored. He wants it to be their night. He has great memories of Belmont when he lived and coached here." Shoemaker also said tickets, at $15 each, should go fast for the event, and suggests that people wanting to attend should get them as soon as possible. There is limit- ed seating (325 people). Tickets can be purchased at the Belmont Chamber of Commerce in Belmont, at the offices of the Belmont Banner and the Mount Holly News at 812 Woodlawn Street in North Belmont, and at Nationwide Insurance in Gastonia, across from Ashbrook High School, during regular office hours.
