Food Lion President Tom Smith will present a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, on behalf of the supermarket chain's 57,000 employees. American Red Cross officials will accept the do- nation which will be used to expe- dite emergency relief services for the victims of Hurricane Andrew. Smith said, "The terrible tragedy of Hurricane Andrew's devastation has mobilized the Food Lion Family in the tradition of commu- nity spirit and generosity that has occurred whenever Americans are called upon during times of emer- gency. In the recent past, Food Lion has contributed significant amounts to Desert Storm and the Red Cross (Hurricane Hugo Relief) to assist Americans in troubling circumstances. Food Lion can do no less, Hurricane Andrew and is most grateful for the immediate and overwhelming response of its em- ployees, vendors and customers." In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, Food Lion ini- tiated a full-scale emergency relief campaign at all of its 938 stores. _.The $100,000 donation is part of an overall effort that will see con- voys of Food Lion semi-tractor trailers leaving from 577 cities in a 13-state region for Florida and Louisiana. The trucks will unload at distribution points designated by the Red Cross.
