Adam, Eve
and The
Katydids
A while back I mentioned the
fact (or fantasy) that Adam was the
very first country singer. I had
some folks who wanted to know
more about it. They asked that.I
write more on the subject. I don't
want to offend anyone, so I'll just
say this is the way it could have
been:
One day Adam saw a monkey
~ with two sticks beating on a large
hollow seashell. The monkey's old
lady had a couple of ghords. They
had dried in the warm sun. The
seeds inside produced a rattling
noise. She had one in each hand.
She shook them in time with the
thump of the sticks, which pro-
duced a bop bop sound. I'm sure
you've head of the Bop. That's the
way it started.
As the rhythm got wilder, an owl
joined in on the second and fourth
beat. Off in the distance came an-
other voice. Katydid, Katydid. Put
them together. Who, bop bop, katy-
did.
Adam was amused at the sound
and rhythm. Adams had some extra
string left. He and Eve had used
some of it to tie a leaf around their
waists. Adam tied the string across
the hollow tree. Now they had
who, bop bop, katydid, twang.
Later, Dwayne Eddy used the same
‘twang on his guitar.
Adam and Eve joined in and be-
‘gan to chant to the rhythm. After a
few hundred years it began to fit
together.
Somewhere along the way,
Adam began to sing. Then, Eve got
in on the act. Adam was the first
country singer, Eve the first female
country singer. Together they were
responsible for the duet. They per-
formed every night in the Paradise
Garden. They saved big on cos-
fp Humes. Everything they sang was
. The band didn't cost any-
ey didn't have to trav-
el. Neither’ they have to set up
and tear down etjuipment.
Things went wel}, for awhile. It
was bound to happen. One of the
fans was a snake in the grass. He
began to tell Eve that Adam was
untrue to her. This went on for a
long time. Eve began to believe
what this no-shouldered trouble
maker told her. One day she asked
Adam, "Have you been running
around on me?" This shook Adam
up and he said, "With whom?"
That could have been where
those ole cheatin’ country songs got
started.
The one thing Adam had going
for himself was that he didn't have
a mother-in-law. He must have in-
spired a lot of singers and musi-
cians.
