Need Help Solving Your Paint Problems? Ask The PAINT QUESTION: What is Mildew? ANSWER: Mildew is not caused by paint. It is an airborne fungus which feeds on nutrients in the surface material, residue on the surface, oils contained in paints and thickeners in latex coatings. Moisture is the most important single factor in the growth of mildew. For this reason, it is gen- erally worse in damp shaded areas. QUESTION: How do you remove mildew? ANSWER: Wash your house, using a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and a small amount of detergent. If the mildew is extremely bad, you may eed to use a scrub brush. Make sure you thoroughly rinse the surface within 5-10 minutes to clean off all the residue. If you do not intend to repaint, you may-need to use a weaker solution so that your paint 1s notdiscolored by. the bleach. Benjamin Moore paint is now on sale at Gamble Hardware.
