All of them were beaten by an alligator. It's no wonder Bullet Bob Hayes bolted to the beach, and yes, that was a Winn-Dixie grocery bag he had over his head. Stewart and Austin had to stay in town, ‘cause there was work to be done. But, they've both laid low. They've been seen ducking out the back door several times. Bubba, the golfing gator who once lived in Moss Lake, led the pickers with a 9-7 record. He said he knew Stewart and Austin were no competition, ‘cause he's seen them play golf before. Hayes finished second with an 8-7 mark, which isn't all that good but helped him draw within one game of the lead because Stewart and Austin both went 6-9. For the year, Stewart leads with a 40-20 mark while Hayes is 39- 21. The guests, thanks to Bubba, pulled into third place with a 38-22 mark and Austin is now where he's always belonged -- in last place with a 36-24 record. Austin de- serves last place because he has picked against the hometown Mountaineers in every game. He says he's just tryin to fire them up, and, quite obviously, it's working. If he fires ‘em up four more times they'll be Southwestern Conference champions! This week's guest is Fearless Dwight Frady, editor of the Belmont Banner-Mt. Holly News, and the latest addition to the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.
