In the keynote speech on Monday night at Oak Grove Baptist Church Fitts, retired minis- ter at Zion Baptist Church, empha- sized that congregations should be sensitive to the needs of retired ministers; that deacons elected by the people should be both church administrators but also assist the pastor in ministering to the people; and that growth always means a re- sponsibility of the church to give the new member a job to do. "There is a false rumor out that retired preachers are rich," said Fitts, who said the average retiree from the Southern Baptist Convention receives less than $300 per month. "Churches can and should help pastors with their annuity and re- tirement programs,” said Fitts. "When new people come in our churches we tend to slide in our duty to include those people in the work of the church,” he said.
