Phyllis Lackey, Director of Radiology, says many people do not really understand what a tech- nologist in the radiology field actu- ally does. "Being a technologist in this field involves much more than pushing buttons on equi9pment,” she says. "Because the field of ra- diology is so high-tech and ever changing, there is a lot of school- ing involved, as well as, certifica- tion and licensing which is re- quired. New developments are constantly taking place such as CAT scanning, nuclear medicine, ultrasound imaging, MRI and other such procedures. We want the com- munity to be aware of value of these diagnostic tools and the pre- cision involved in applying them correctly.” Community awareness and cdu- cation is also an important aspect of diagnosing many illnesses. The staff of technicians in the Department of Radiology is com- mitted to informing their commu- nity about the role of radiology in early diagnosis. Recently, one of the technologists led a workshop on breast cancer at a local church, stressing the importance of self- participation in one's health care.
