a | Mm EE ER ae Beer, wine referendum in future? GROVER - A referendum on the off-premise sale of beer and wine could be held as early as spring. Juanita Pruitt, who is heading up a petition drive for signatures, said Monday night that 123 signatures or 35 percent of the registered vot- ers are required to officially call the referendum. Pruitt presented a letter from Rob Yelton, county attorney, and the Cleveland County Board of Elections outlining the procedures. The local board has the option of calling the referendum but once the signatures are verified by the elec- tions board, the election can be called by the county board. Mayor Ronald Queen said no ac- tion is necessary by the local coun- cil and accepted the petition with- out reading it into the record. He passed a copy which each member of the board inspected. Pruitt said a major grocery chain is looking at Grover with an eye to opening a super market. "We need to okay the sale of beer and wine for this establishment. You only have to go just across the railroad tracks to buy in South Carolina," she said. Pruitt said she will begin circu- lating the petition this week. Christmas cantata at First Baptist The Sanctuary Choir of Kings Mountain's First Baptist Church will present the Christmas cantata, "Love's Pure Light," at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. The 50-voice choir will be ac- companied by a 15-piece orchestra made up of church members and guests from the Kings Mountain High School band program. The public is invited to attend.
